Inspiration:
Sleek Choice draws inspiration from the problem statement mentioned in the hackathon. We believe that accessing quality research should be effortless, not tedious. Understanding the challenges researchers face, we aim to empower them with a seamless solution. Our goal is to simplify the process of finding and accessing relevant research papers, making it efficient and hassle-free.
What it does:
- Sleek Choice is an automated system that fetches research papers from renowned sources, catering to users' specific interests.
- Personalized content is tailored to each user's preferences.
- Users receive weekly email recommendations that align with their interests.
- Say goodbye to time-consuming manual searches and enjoy the efficiency of Sleek Choice.
How we built it:
Requirements
We gathered all the information and requirements about the product from the hack shark and put everything in a notion page. We wanted to build a super friendly, easy to use and flexible app to use.
Research
In our research we figured out the following things:
- Our target audience, who and why they need this tool
- We have taken top countries where our target audience are present and understood what sources/ websites they access to get the research papers from.
- We have shortlisted few and in that identified the relevant websites where we can get the research papers for free.
- We reverse engineered those websites to know how it is built and what are APIs exposed by them.
Development
- After we get to know about the APIs, we kick started the development of our backend server by writing a small piece of code to check the feasibility of crawling the research papers from the relevant websites and send emails.
- As it came out well, we started to create UI mocks in Excalidraw to the identify the UI, UX and the data that we can show to our users.
- Once the mocks are ready, we started to create our database modelling to store essential information of our user and their areas of interest.
- Once the data modelling is ready, we started to create REST APIs that can we used by our frontend application to onboard users and collect their preferences.
- Once the our backend is completed, we started to create the frontend application with onboarding pages such as signup, login and set password in first place.
- Then we created a dashboard page to show the number of emails and recommendation sent to the user.
Testing
After completing the development, we quickly started to test our applications by ourselves to ensure the quality of the product. We found some glitches and fixed them.
Challenges we ran into:
One of the big challenges we faced is to get the research papers. Research papers were not easily available in most of the portals. Even if they had, it was hard to get them downloaded, as the portals didn't have any APIs available to the public.
Accomplishments that we're proud of:
We were able to complete this product within a short span of time, yet uncompromising on the quality. We have focused on the onboarding as well, making it easy for the users to onboard with lesser keystrokes and clicks.
What we learned:
We learned to quickly iterate over the ideas and find hacks to finish it in the short span of time. It was really fun and exciting process!
What's next for Sleek Choice:
The journey doesn't stop here for Sleek Choice. We are committed to constant improvement and expanding the platform's capabilities. Our future plans include integrating with additional reputable research databases, enhancing the recommendation algorithms to provide even more accurate and personalized suggestions, and incorporating features that facilitate collaboration and knowledge sharing among researchers.
