Inspiration

Seeing the streamers and the disco ball as part of the theme of Innovate Her wanted us to help build a safe night out for girls across the globe. When it comes to safety, women are always made to feel that they need to refrain from having fun or enjoying themselves due to feeling unsafe. We wanted to tackle that issue as we felt that it was crucial that women did not feel oppressed, rather empowered when it came to their safety. Whether it be wanting to know about the events hosted by the local community or being able to review local venues, we wanted to first and foremost ensure safety and a sense of connection while empowering women to have a fun night out without constantly feeling on edge.

What it does

Slay Safe provides a platform for women to access information on events and safe venues near their location. This is currently Purdue/West Lafayette based. Other women provide reviews and ratings of local events/venues so women feel like they can rely on the community of other women to spend the night slaying safe. A maps feature is also inbuilt, providing them with the ability to search through nearby locations. There is a page with resources and tips on how to spend the night safely while having fun, whether that be utilizing pepper spray or identifying potentially spiked drinks.

How we built it

We built SlaySafe using React Native, JavaScript, and Expo to ensure seamless cross-platform functionality on both iOS and Android. With Expo Go for rapid testing and Android Studio's emulator for debugging, we streamlined development to create a mobile app that prioritizes accessibility and user experience.

Challenges we ran into

We had trouble with ensuring there was compatibility with Android devices.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were able to incorporate a map that displayed nearby venues based on location. We had a smooth layout displayed after adding Google Maps/Apple maps. We were also able to tailor the app to show reviews, hot tips, and other essential information.

What we learned

We learned that we can utilize technology such as React native and expo go to create a mobile application. This was a first experience for us.

What's next for SlaySafe

SlaySafe can be expanded beyond the Purdue region. We would like to utilize APIs and tools such as Groq to utilize AI to analyze user sentiment to suggest the best events that align with the user’s interests.
