Inspiration
We wanted to build something gloriously pointless, absurdly funny, and wildly community-driven—just for the joy of it. Inspired by the spirit of Reddit’s chaotic energy (and the Silly Sh!t Challenge), we created a game that lets anyone slap the sun… for no good reason at all. Why? Because it's Reddit—and because we could.
What it does
Slap the Sun is a community-powered microgame where users do one thing: 👋 Slap the sun.
Each slap:
Increments a global slap counter shared across all users
Triggers a random quantum compliment
Tracks progress and rewards players with trophies at slap milestones
Delivers instant toast feedback for every action (funny, weird, cosmic)
There’s no point… and that’s the point. It’s pure, shareable fun powered by Bolt.new and Reddit’s developer tools.
How we built it
Built entirely in Bolt.new using JavaScript and Reddit’s Developer Tools
Created a simple UI with a slap button, live slap counter, and a compliment generator
Added milestone trophies and toast feedback to reward users for repeated slaps
Stored global and (optional) session-based data using app.storage
Designed it mobile-first for maximum Reddit scroller engagement
Challenges we ran into
Keeping it simple while still making it fun and replayable
Tracking user progress without login (had to get creative with session logic)
Balancing weirdness with usability so the chaos is still intuitive
Testing interactions across devices to make sure slaps feel responsive and satisfying
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Created a fully functional multiplayer game in Bolt.new with no backend
Turned a ridiculous idea into a polished experience that made people laugh
Designed a smooth mobile-friendly UI with real-time shared data
Delivered joy, randomness, and absurdity—on purpose
Made Reddit-worthy weirdness with trophies, quantum compliments, and community slap chaos
What we learned
How to use Bolt.new’s shared storage and UI engine to build a real-time app
That humor and simplicity can be more powerful than complex features
The power of toasts, emojis, and unpredictability in creating delight
Creative ways to reward users without needing accounts or authentication
The importance of testing across screen sizes for accessible weirdness
What's next for slap the sun
Add Reddit login (OAuth) to track slaps per user and slap streaks
Introduce leaderboards, hidden trophies, and sun reactions (animated/emotional)
Daily “solar weather” events: bonus slaps, flare storms, or cosmic rage modes
Integrate a Reddit bot to post weekly slap stats or funny recaps to a subreddit
Build out a mobile-friendly mini-arcade of similar weird microgames under the Synthetic Sparks brand
