Inspiration

As another academic year rounds up, and college approaches for many of us, we realized that the path ahead is confusing and intricate, and filled with pitfalls. We pondered proposing other applications, but Skyward stirred in us a drive to build something that's actually meaningful, something that will outlive the hackathon weekend.

What it does

Skyward connects students to their futures by providing career paths and information. Unlike competitors, Skyward doesn't just focus on one job or one factor—it looks at the big picture, and molds a career path for the student, hyper-personalized and tailored to their specific passions. It has a Careers page, which allows students to look through specific domains, niches, companies, and jobs. The star of the show is Skyward's Explore page—after a student logs all their relevant information in their Profile, they can activate Skyward's career exploration module.

Skyward also comes packed with a chat feature, allowing aspirants to network with like-minded individuals and colleagues.

How we built it

Skyward was designed by our awesome team using Figma. We first developed wireframes, then worked to flesh them out, adding color and a unique design.

Challenges we ran into

Our first initial struggle was with finding an idea that gave us purpose—it turns out that the idea we came up with is purpose. How do we bring back passion and purpose to the workplace? How do we improve the dreaded Monday for the next generation? Identity design was (unsurprisingly) easy and enjoyable, but building the UI design had us fiddling with constraints and layouts for hours. We also ran into challenges with the video presentation—we had a lot to say, and so little time. Can you guess how many takes were done of the presentation video? We ran it about twelve times. Fun fact: converting video formats takes a shocking amount of time. But at the end of the day, we're glad to say we put our best into it.

What we learned

We learned a great deal working on Skyward. We developed collaboration and communication skills and split up the work so that we could produce a product efficiently. Putting together mockups and wireframes was finicky at first, but we as a team eventually got the hang of it. AlphaHacks gave us the opportunity to apply identity design, UI Design, and collaboration skills. Thank you, sponsors, judges, and organizers!

What's next for Skyward

In the future, Skyward may develop more of its Chat feature, and work closely with sponsors to bring the practicalities of the workplace closer to students. We may connect with educators and school systems to bring Skyward to the classroom, put it in student hands, and let them use it as a torch to guide them to a future worth studying for. Skyward means a lot to all of us, and we'd love to continue it after this weekend.

Ever forward, The Skyward Team
