Inspiration
We were inspired by the pressing issue of unequal access to safety and emergency services across different communities. Rural and low-income areas often lack surveillance, law enforcement presence, and adequate infrastructure, leaving them vulnerable to crime and slow emergency response times. Our goal was to build a technology-driven solution that levels the playing field in terms of public safety.
What it does
SkyScout is an AI-powered drone system that autonomously monitors high-crime and underserved areas, detecting weapons, gunshots, and distress signals in real-time. It alerts authorities instantly, providing a fast and reliable response mechanism. Powered by saltwater fuel cells, SkyScout is both sustainable and efficient, capable of operating in various challenging environments.
How we built it
We combined AI technologies such as object recognition and sound detection with a sustainable drone framework powered by saltwater fuel cells. We designed the system to be modular and adaptable for various environments—urban, rural, and disaster-prone areas. The platform integrates predictive analytics for crowd behavior and is scalable through partnerships with NGOs and governments.
Challenges we ran into
-Ensuring continuous power in remote locations without relying on traditional batteries -Achieving reliable and accurate threat detection in diverse and unpredictable settings -Addressing the ethical and privacy concerns related to drone surveillance -Designing a system that’s cost-effective and scalable for global deployment
Accomplishments that we're proud of
-Developed a zero-emission, saltwater-powered drone system -Achieved 60% lower operational costs compared to lithium battery alternatives -Designed an AI model capable of detecting gunshots and distress sounds in real-time -Created a scalable framework suitable for partnerships and global expansion
What we learned
-Access to safety is a deeply unequal issue that requires scalable, tech-forward solutions -Sustainability and security can go hand in hand with the right innovations -Collaboration across disciplines—engineering, AI, and social policy—is key to impactful solutions -Predictive analytics can significantly enhance proactive policing strategies
What's next for SkyScout
We aim to: -Partner with city governments, border agencies, and NGOs for field deployment -Expand drone swarm capabilities for large-scale event and disaster monitoring -Enhance AI models with real-world data to improve threat detection accuracy -Begin pilot programs in regions with high security disparities
