SkyLings – Project Story
Inspiration
SkyLings was inspired by the sense of wonder and discovery found in creature-collection games, life simulations, and fantasy adventure worlds. I wanted to create a game that combined the excitement of discovering new creatures with the creativity of building and expanding a personal world. The idea of floating islands in the sky offered a visually unique setting that encouraged exploration and imagination.
The central fantasy became simple: what if players could build their own kingdom among the clouds while collecting magical companions that help shape their adventure?
What I Learned
Throughout the design process, I learned the importance of balancing creativity with structure. Early ideas focused heavily on exploration and creature collection, but I discovered that long-term engagement requires meaningful progression systems and player goals.
I also learned how interconnected game systems need to be. Resource gathering, creature collection, habitat building, exploration, and progression all needed to support one another instead of feeling like separate features. Designing these relationships helped me better understand player motivation and retention.
How I Built the Project
I began by defining the core gameplay loop:
Explore → Collect → Build → Upgrade → Unlock New Areas
From there, I designed the progression structure around expanding floating islands, discovering rare SkyLings, and unlocking new regions of the sky world. I created concept art, visual references, user interface mockups, and a player journey map to visualize how players would experience the game during their first session.
The project was developed as a complete pre-production package, including a Game Design Document, visual concepts, player journey planning, and a production roadmap. Each document was designed to demonstrate not only the creative vision of the game but also a realistic path toward development.
Challenges Faced
One of the biggest challenges was determining the right balance between accessibility and depth. The game needed to be simple enough for new players to understand quickly while providing enough progression and collection goals to encourage long-term engagement.
Another challenge was ensuring that every system contributed to the overall player experience. Features that sounded interesting on their own were removed or simplified if they did not strengthen the core gameplay loop.
Creating a world that felt magical and visually distinctive while maintaining a clear gameplay structure required multiple iterations of the game's theme, progression systems, and visual direction.
Final Thoughts
SkyLings represents a combination of exploration, creativity, and progression-driven gameplay. The project demonstrates how creature collection, world building, and strategic resource management can work together to create a rewarding mobile experience. Through this process, I strengthened my skills in game design, system planning, player retention design, visual development, and production planning while creating a concept that could realistically grow into a full game.
