Inspiration
SKYFALL KNOCKOUT was inspired by the chaotic fun of casual party brawlers and the raw tension of battle royale shrink zones. We wanted to strip away the complex looting mechanics of traditional battle royales and focus on one universally satisfying action: successfully blasting a rival off a platform. By merging simple physics-based knockbacks with a vibrant, toy-like art style, we set out to create a hyper-casual survival game that feels like a live mini-tournament in every session.
What it does
SKYFALL KNOCKOUT is a fast-paced, 6-player mobile arena brawler where players fight to be the last one standing on a collapsing sky island. Each session lasts up to 3 minutes, during which the arena physically crumbles from the edges every 30 seconds, forcing intense close-quarter combat. Players utilize oversized melee weapons (like frying pans and golf clubs) and ranged projectiles to knock opponents into the abyss. It features a transparent, rank-based buff system that rewards previous match winners with higher-tier perks while giving lower-ranked players tactical modifiers and environmental hazards to turn the tide and score an upset victory.
How we built it
The blueprint for this project is engineered for a highly scalable, data-driven structure over a 10-week production pipeline:
- Gameplay Engine: Designed around Unity/Unreal character controllers with robust physics-based impulse metrics for distinct knockback profiles.
- Architecture: Formulated a finite state machine (Normal, Groggy, Recovering, Eliminated) to manage player lifecycles, and a modular ring tile system for automated arena collapse.
- Balancing & Simulation: Programmed a data-table simulation (10,000-roll runs) to verify the drop rates and scaling multipliers of the rank-based perk system.
- Visual Identity: Curated a distinct visual language featuring exaggerated character silhouettes for high readability on small screens and unified, color-coded hazard visual effects.
Challenges we ran into
Balancing the mechanics so that higher-ranked buffs wouldn't lead to absolute dominance was a major hurdle. With Legendary buffs offering up to a +50% stat increase, we had to invent balancing guardrails. We solved this by ensuring all perk multipliers are temporary and reset every round, capping permanent progression, and enhancing map hazards (like ice or sticky bombs) so that any player can bypass stat deficits through superior positioning and environmental awareness.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully proved that a game can offer tactical depth without relying on complex controls. We are incredibly proud of the "Groggy State" mechanic, which instead of instantly killing a player at zero health, gives them a 5-second window where they take 2x knockback. This beautifully transforms a standard health bar into an active game of edge-control and thrilling clutch recoveries.
What we learned
We learned the importance of "readability first" in fast-paced mobile environments. Every VFX, trajectory arc, and arena fracture warning had to be short, bold, and strictly prioritized so they never obscure the fatal edges of the map or hinder responsive player inputs.
What's next for SKYFALL KNOCKOUT
While the core MVP validates the single-player 6-player arena loop, the next milestone focuses on content expansion. We plan to rollout official online matchmaking, competitive ranked seasons, and party systems supporting 2v2v2 or 3v3 team modes. Additionally, we are looking forward to designing themed map expansions—such as the Air Sphinx, Sky Garden, or Neo Rooftop—each introducing unique arena layouts and custom stage hazards.
