Inspiration
Sky Rings Phú Yên was inspired by the landscapes, landmarks, and coastal scenery of Phú Yên, Vietnam. My goal was to create a simple but challenging flying experience that combines arcade gameplay with discovering beautiful destinations.
I originally developed Sky Rings Phú Yên independently as a mobile game. For the Amazon Developer Hackathon, I significantly expanded the project into a television-focused version designed for remote-control gameplay and a 10-foot viewing experience. My game's priority is: family entertainment. A colorful flying game designed for living-room play naturally.
What it does
Sky Rings Phú Yên – Fire TV Edition is a skill-based flying game in which players guide a flying character through rings and obstacles while progressing through environments inspired by Phú Yên.
Players build their score, try to beat their best score, experience destination introductions, complete levels, and encounter victory and game-over sequences.
The television edition adds remote-friendly controls so the game can be played without relying on a touchscreen.
What I added for the Fire TV edition
During the hackathon, I significantly updated the existing game by adding:
- D-pad navigation for television remotes
- Center/OK button confirmation
- Remote-friendly menu navigation
- Back-button pause and resume behavior
- A dedicated TV pause menu
- TV-focused focus and game-state handling
- Landscape presentation for a large-screen experience
- Remote-control instructions
- Native Android handling for reliable Back-button input
- A signed Android release build tested in a TV emulator
The Back-button implementation required additional native Android handling so the remote Back event could be delivered reliably from Android through Cordova to the Construct game logic.
How I built it
The original game was created independently in Construct 3.
For the television version, I exported the project through an Android/Cordova workflow and used Android Studio to build, debug, test, and sign the release APK.
I added native Java handling in MainActivity to capture the Android Back key and dispatch the appropriate event to the JavaScript/Cordova layer. Construct 3 then uses game-state logic to determine whether Back should pause or resume gameplay.
I tested the final signed release build with an Android TV Emulator using D-pad, Center/OK, and Back-button controls. The hackathon FAQ explicitly permits the Android TV Emulator for the Fire TV track.
Challenges I ran into
The most difficult challenge was reliable Back-button handling.
The Android layer was receiving the Back key, but the original Construct Browser event was not consistently responding to it. I used Android Studio Logcat to verify the key event, then added native Android code that forwards the Back event directly to the JavaScript/Cordova layer.
Another challenge was television emulator performance. I adjusted virtual-device settings such as hardware graphics acceleration, CPU cores, memory, and screen resolution to improve testing performance.
I also had to rethink an interface originally created for touchscreen use. Television requires clearer focus behavior, larger readable elements, D-pad navigation, and predictable remote-control actions.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
I independently developed Sky Rings Phú Yên from concept to a complete playable game and then significantly extended it into a television-focused version.
For this hackathon, I successfully implemented remote navigation, Center/OK input, Back-button pause and resume, TV-focused menus, native Android input handling, and a signed release build.
I am especially proud that the television controls now work as a complete interaction system rather than simply displaying the original mobile game on a larger screen.
What I learned
This project taught me that designing for television requires a different approach from mobile development.
Navigation, focus, viewing distance, readability, input behavior, and pause/resume logic all need to be reconsidered for a remote-controlled 10-foot experience.
I also learned how Android native events, Cordova, JavaScript, and Construct 3 can work together in one project.
What's next for Sky Rings Phú Yên
My next step is to continue testing and refining the television edition for distribution on Fire TV and other compatible television platforms.
I also plan to improve the TV interface, optimize performance on additional devices, expand the game with more destinations and levels, and explore additional television-specific gameplay features.
