Inspiration
The inspiration for this project is deeply personal. I am from Kyrgyzstan, and I have always wanted to tell stories about my nomadic heritage and culture. For years, I've had this specific idea in mind, a concept I call "drone ethno-punk"—a fusion of rich, ancient nomadic aesthetics with futuristic technology.
I wanted to explore what a high-tech nomad shepherd would look like. The image of a traditional yurt flying, or a girl using a holographic map, became the spark that formed the basis for my generative prompts.
In the past, realizing such an ambitious idea as a solo artist seemed impossible. I am incredibly happy and excited that with the arrival of AI tools (like Nano Banana and Veo), this long-held dream finally became possible.
What it does
"Sky Nomad Girl" is an animated short film telling the story of a young shepherdess in a futuristic nomadic world. The project explores how technology and tradition can not only coexist but also strengthen each other, and it was created entirely using generative AI tools. The film functions as a proof-of-concept for a new style of "drone ethno-punk" and demonstrates that a compelling, narrative short can be created by a single artist using this new workflow.
How we built it
This project represents a new frontier in filmmaking, where a creative vision is realized by "directing" artificial intelligence. My main tools were Nano Banana, Veo 3.1, Photoshop, and Premiere Pro.
Prompting and Generation: Instead of traditional modeling, I used text prompts to generate keyframes and video scenes. I "directed" the AI (Nano Banana and Veo 3.1) to get the right characters, environments, lighting, and camera angles.
Iteration and Selection: Hundreds of image and video variations were generated. A key part of the process was curating the best "takes"—those that not only looked impressive but also fit the story's emotional tone.
Compositing and Retouching: Photoshop was used to clean up, refine, and composite some of the generated frames to achieve the perfect composition or fix AI-generated artifacts.
Editing and Post-Production: All the generated material was assembled in Premiere Pro. This is where the magic truly came together. Through editing, sound design, and color grading, the disparate clips were woven into a single, coherent narrative.
Challenges we ran into
Working with AI is not just "pushing a button." It presents a new set of unique challenges:
Control and Consistency: The biggest challenge by far was achieving visual consistency. Getting the AI to generate the same character across different scenes, with different emotions and from different angles, was incredibly difficult and required dozens of prompt iterations.
"Directing" the AI: The AI doesn't always understand nuance. I had to "fight" the models to get a specific camera angle or movement. It felt more like taming a creative force than giving a direct command.
Unpredictability: The AI often produced "happy accidents" that were better than what I had planned, but just as often, it would go in a completely wrong direction, forcing me to rethink my prompts from scratch.
Editing from "Chaos": Assembling a coherent story from a vast library of generated, sometimes inconsistent clips, was the main challenge in Premiere Pro.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
This project completely changed my perspective on the creative process.
I realized that in the age of AI, the most crucial skills are prompt engineering and a strong, unshakeable creative vision. You are not just an artist; you are a director who must know exactly what you want and how to articulate that vision to a machine.
What we learned
I learned to "think" in the AI's language, to anticipate its behavior, and to steer it toward an artistic goal. But most importantly, I learned that AI tools don't replace the creator. They become an incredibly powerful amplifier, allowing a single person to build worlds that once required an entire studio.
What's next for SKY NOMAD GIRL
This short film is just the beginning. I see "Sky Nomad Girl" as a character and a world with endless stories to tell. The next steps are to refine my AI-driven workflow to get even more consistent and emotionally complex results. I plan to explore more of this "drone ethno-punk" world, creating new adventures for the heroine and potentially developing this concept into a full series. I am also excited to share this work with film festivals to showcase what is possible with this new era of filmmaking tools.
