Skinsight: Smarter Product Tracking for Safer Skincare
✨ Inspired by Real-Life Frustrations
Skinsight began with a simple but familiar problem: I kept forgetting when I opened skincare and cosmetic products or for how long I'd been using them, and wondered whether they were in fact still safe or effective.
There was no straightforward way to track shelf life. Like many of my friends, I scribbled dates on containers with a marker, kept notes in my phone, or kept guessing in general.
These workarounds were not ideal but they planted an idea: what if we could build a beautifully simple, streamlined solution that helps users track and manage their personal care products more confidently?
💄 A $12 Billion Industry Without Expiry Dates
The cosmetics and skincare industry in Canada alone is worth nearly $12 billion. Yet many consumers are unaware that expiry information isn’t actually required on packaging.
What does the open jar symbol actually mean? Where is the expiry date? These labels will point to a “PAO” (Period After Opening), referring to how long a product remains safe after being opened—commonly 3, 6, 12, or 24 months—but the average user doesn’t always know how or when to track this information.
There’s a gap between the user and their product's lifecycle. Skinsight aims to bridge that.
💡 Introducing Skinsight
The name Skinsight combines “skin” + “insight,” representing a smart, analytical approach to skincare in a refreshing and uncluttered user experience.
Rather than rely on manual batch code calculators or Sharpies, Skinsight provides users with a digital skincare cabinet that’s accessible, intuitive, and practical.
Key Features
- 📸 Image-based batch code capture – no need to manually type each code. Our system recognizes batch codes and automatically generates a detailed product card.
- 🗂️ Smart product cards – including manufacture date, estimated expiry, product age, and PAO recommendations.
- 🛁 Custom product cabinets – users can save and sort items into personalized skincare, makeup, and bodycare categories.
- ⏳ Timeline tracking + reminders – set alerts to use products at peak effectiveness before they expire, particularly important for those containing actives such as Vitamin C or AHA/BHAs
- 🛠️ Custom PAO tracking – users can override the estimated timeline and start their own countdown based on when they actually began using a product, aligning the tracking function to their real life and routine.
Skinsight was designed to address these pain points and help skincare and makeup lovers get the most value and best performance out of the products they already own, or those they purchase in the future.
🔭 Future Potential
We see Skinsight as much more than a personal tracker. With continued development, it could evolve into:
- 🔄 A synced, cross-device experience
- 📧 Smart integrations with digital receipts
- 💄 A pro tool for makeup artists managing large rotating kits
- 🛍️ A retail tool for monitoring floor stock freshness at stores like Sephora
- 🧾 Restock reminders linked to user carts and loyalty programs
With support from major cosmetic brands, Skinsight would have the potential to develop into a standardized batch code tracker, helping modernize how the industry shares expiry data—and making open access the norm rather than the exception.
Ultimately, our hope is to reduce cosmetic waste, promote more mindful consumption, and ensure users are getting the full benefits from their favourite beauty products for healthy skin and healthy routines.
⚙️ Technical Challenges & Our Pivot
Initially, we envisioned Skinsight as a mobile-first app. However, due to technical limitations during the Bolt Hackathon—especially around API access and mobile deployment—we made a strategic pivot.
To ensure smooth deployment and preserve UX integrity, we shifted to a desktop dashboard format. While this meant compromising on some of the visual richness of our original mobile UI, we prioritized:
- ✅ Clear information architecture
- ✅ Core functionality and feature flow
- ✅ A usable and intuitive MVP
We’ve included screenshots and visual mockups in our case study to show our original design direction, which emphasized a breathable, inclusive aesthetic grounded in real skin tones, product textures, and minimalist clarity.
🌿 Final Thoughts
Skinsight was built from real user needs—my own included. It’s a thoughtful response to a widespread problem, designed to help people simplify their routines, reduce waste, and use their products with confidence.
We believe in Skinsight—both as a digital product and as a potential curator of beauty routines. And we’re proud to have created something that not only works, but feels beautiful to use.
