Inspiration
Skincare can be confusing. From what i have observed, those close to me including myself struggle to find what is best for their skin and if they get an idea is where it can be found and what is authentic. I wanted to make skincare more personal, accessible, and easier to navigate. This inspired us to build SkinOra, an AI-powered skincare companion that helps users understand their skin and explore recommendations suited to their needs and location.
What it does
SkinOra allows users to take or upload a facial photo for AI-powered skin analysis using the YouCam API. It presents skin insights and helps users explore personalized skincare routines, relevant products, and skincare clinics. Users can also create an account, manage their profile, and access their skincare experience through the app. The vision is to make skincare recommendations more relevant to people's individual needs and where they live, rather than assuming the same products and services are available to everyone.
How we built it
I built SkinOra as a web application using React and Vite for the frontend, with a Node.js backend to handle API requests. We integrated the YouCam API to provide AI-powered skin analysis and used Firebase Authentication to enable Google sign-in. The interface includes account creation and login, skin scanning, results, skincare routines, product discovery, clinic booking, and profile management.

I am proud of building a working SkinOra interface that brings AI-powered skin analysis and skincare exploration into one experience. We integrated the YouCam API, enabled Google sign-in through Firebase, and developed a profile system alongside the core application screens.
What we learned
I learned that building an AI-powered application involves more than connecting a model or API. The surrounding user experience, reliability, privacy, and usefulness matter just as much.
What's next for SkinOra
The long-term goal is to make SkinOra a more accessible and personalized skincare companion that helps people make more informed decisions about their skincare routines.
