SkinCareBad

A concise, transparent, and straight forward website that allows you to become your own dermatologist.

What did we want to solve?

Skincare is at its ultimate peak right now and that also means you will also be seeing a lot of products being advertised, placed on shelves at places like Sephora or Target. But this overwhelming influx of products that companies are coming out with can be difficult to sift through and ultimately we run into three main problems when trying to figure out what fits our skin type and concerns: How do we avoid overbuying products only to realize they don’t work with products that we know work already? Why is it so difficult to find a clear-cut and concise answer on the internet telling us whether or not one ingredient will/won’t work with another? And why should it be so hard to simply know what is going on our face and what we’re doing to it without having to get a degree in dermatology or going to a dermatologist for upwards of $150?

The ability to know what we’re devoting our money, time, and skin into should not be so convoluted and vague.

What is OUR solution

A simple, clear, and easy to follow website that would allow an initial drop down button that would let a user choose any of the given ingredients available on our website, and compare it to a following product on a second drop down button.

By making this website, we would eliminate the unnecessarily long and arduous task of having to scour the internet for the simple question of, "Will this ingredient work well with an ingredient that I have?"

How we built it

We used a combination of HTML and CSS for our Front-End development while JavaScript for our Back-End development.

Challenges we ran into

We all had very minimal knowledge on using Github as a group of people, we understood how to code/make programs that did one function but didn’t know how we would interconnect different languages to make a large cohesive project (aka connecting Back-End with Front-End), and the entire process of making a website was completely new and foreign to us.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Although we had faced many issues and roadblocks (often wanting to bang our heads when working on the Front-End development) we had ultimately made a semi-functioning and interactive website where we were able to include all of the features we wanted to have for our potential users.

Our biggest challenge was essentially learning brand new coding languages in a matter of hours and having to try our best to build something out of our new found knowledge, yet we believe we came out successful and we our proud of our final project.

What we learned

WOW! Making a website is hard, and not even just an entire website, but even something so seemingly insignificant like a dropdown menu/button is something that took a lot of patience, time, and devotion to understand and develop!

But we saw this as a significant milestone as none of us coming into SheInnovates knew how to even start making a website.

What's next for SkinCareBad

Our Website: This Hackathon was our first taste of what it’s like to develop a website and also seeing the intersection between Front-End and Back-End development. Because of this, we want to further improve our website to be more versatile and hopefully be able to provide even more information than what we had shown today.

Our Code: We hope to also learn more about Front-End development and how to implement more methods of search. For example, we initially thought of allowing the user to input an ingredient of their own, however we soon realized that there are too many variations in which the user can enter a certain ingredient, therefore we constrained them to a drop down menu to better suit our coding abilities.

Our Research: We want to expand on the amount of ingredients that could be chosen/entered on our website. Again, due to the allotted amount of time we were only able to provide the user with ingredients that we found were the most sought after/best selling on popular skincare websites and brands. By doing this we hope to also be able to become a more refined and niche website amongst many.
