Inspiration

Often times, as students, we have been confused about a lot of things and sometimes didn't know how to react to certain situations. We'd always wish that all of this was taught in school. Upon research, it turns out that around 81% of college graduates wish they’d been taught some real-life skills in college. The percentage of financially literate adults was 54% in 2021, dropping to 34% in 2022, and only around 33% were somewhat financially literate in 2023. Simply put, people are lacking real-life skills. So we thought, what if there was an app that helped with exactly that – something that taught how to be emotionally intelligent, communicate effectively, manage time and stress, and more.

What it does

After School is a chatbot designed to discuss, help, and provide detailed information about most of the things that are considered essential life skills. It's your virtual mentor, available anytime to offer guidance and support.

How we built it

We created After School by leveraging datastores filled with publicly available training data covering tips, advice, and strategies related to life skills. We trained AI agents on this data to ensure After School is knowledgeable and helpful. The frontend was built using React, and we seamlessly integrated the AI agent into the website using Dialogflow.

Challenges we ran into

Technical Integration: Integrating the AI agent with the React frontend required overcoming technical hurdles to ensure seamless communication and a user-friendly experience. Data Curation: Ensuring the quality and accuracy of the training data was crucial. We had to carefully select and filter sources to avoid misinformation or biased advice.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

User-Friendly Interface: We created a simple, intuitive interface that makes it easy for anyone to interact with After School and get the help they need. Comprehensive Knowledge Base: After School has an extensive knowledge base covering a wide range of life skills, from financing to sustainable living to health.

What's next for After School

Enhanced Chat Interface: We're committed to continuously refining the chat interface to make interactions with the chatbot even more seamless and natural. Routine Management & Tracking: We plan to introduce features that allow users to set goals, track progress, and build healthy habits in various life skill areas. Educational Games & Activities: Interactive games and activities will be added to make learning life skills more engaging and enjoyable. Third-Party App Integration: We're exploring integrations with other apps and platforms to expand After School's functionality and reach. Voice & Sign Language Understanding: We aim to make After School accessible to an even broader audience by incorporating voice and sign language recognition capabilities.
