Inspiration

Our inspiration stemmed from the desire to tackle a common challenge in a fun and approachable way.
Skincare can often feel like an overwhelming and confusing journey for people of all ages and genders. However, we believe skincare should be embraced as a form of self-care, something to enjoy rather than dread. That’s why we created Skin Write: a tool to help users track which products and routines work best for their skin, promoting not just physical well being, but mental wellness too. Helping people to feel beautiful inside and out journal entry by journal entry!

What it does

Skin Write is a virtual journal where users can document their skincare journey. They can make their own profile where they can input daily entities every day for a whole year keeping track of products used in their day and nighttime routines. Additionally, they are allowed to upload pictures of their skin care journey to reference back to. Our site also includes a monthly overview page where users can reflect back on the month after having some time to try out new products to see which ones are working and which ones are not!

How we built it

We developed our project using HTML, Python, CSS, and Django within the PyCharm environment. During the initial brainstorming session, we outlined the website's pages and identified key user functionalities. Samantha took charge of front-end development and designing the user interface, while Muskan concentrated on back-end functionality. Ultimately, we collaborated as full-stack developers to integrate both the front and back ends seamlessly.

Challenges we ran into

While working on our website, we encountered several Git-related challenges, such as issues with pulling correctly or accidentally working on the same file, leading to conflicting changes. At first, it was difficult to manage due to our limited experience, but as the project progressed, we became more acquainted with resolving these issues. Though we're still gaining learning, these skills will be valuable in future projects, as well as in jobs and internships.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

As this was our first hackathon in college, we were proud to have created a project that others could use and that could make a positive impact. While it wasn't anything large-scale, as a small team of two beginners, we learned how to navigate a new software environment and manage the entire process of building a project from start to finish on our own. Overall, I'm glad we persevered, even when we had doubts in the beginning, and saw it through to the end.

What we learned

Throughout this project, we became more familiar with web development and various functionalities, such as enabling users to upload pictures and implementing profile authentication during sign-up. On the front end, we experimented with different animations and interface styles to align with our mission and create an inviting user experience. For instance, since our goal was to create a virtual journal, we decided to implement animations that resemble a typewriter to give users the same feeling.

What's next for Skin Write

Our goal is to continue blending technology with non-coding interests. By integrating our everyday hobbies into our professional work, as we did with Skin Write, we combine our projects with personal creativity and passion. We aim to use our software development skills to make a meaningful impact on the world and the people around us.
