Skin Disease Detection Using CNN Inspiration
Skin diseases are very common, but many people do not have quick access to dermatologists, especially in rural or remote areas. Early detection is very important because some skin conditions can become serious if not treated in time.
The inspiration for this project came from the idea of using Artificial Intelligence to help people identify possible skin diseases early. By simply uploading an image of a skin condition, the system can analyze it and predict the possible disease. This can help people become more aware of their skin health and seek medical advice when needed.
What it does
The Skin Disease Detection System uses a deep learning model to analyze images of skin conditions and predict the type of skin disease.
The system works in the following way:
The user uploads an image of the affected skin area.
The image is processed and analyzed by a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model.
The model compares the image with patterns it learned during training.
The system predicts the most likely skin disease.
The predicted result is displayed to the user.
This system can help provide quick preliminary analysis of skin conditions.
How we built it
We built the project using Deep Learning and Image Processing techniques.
The development process included several steps:
Dataset Preparation
Collected images of different skin diseases.
Organized them into labeled categories.
Data Preprocessing
Resized images to a standard size.
Normalized image data.
Split the dataset into training and testing sets.
Model Development
Implemented a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model.
CNN layers were used to extract important visual features from images.
A Softmax layer was used to classify the disease type.
Training the Model
The model was trained using labeled skin disease images.
Accuracy and loss were monitored to improve performance.
User Interface
Built a simple interface where users can upload skin images and receive predictions.
Challenges we ran into
During the development of this project, we faced several challenges:
Dataset Availability Finding a high-quality and well-labeled dataset of skin disease images was difficult.
Image Variability Skin images vary due to lighting, skin tone, camera quality, and angle, which makes accurate classification challenging.
Model Accuracy Achieving good accuracy required experimenting with different model architectures and training parameters.
Overfitting The model initially performed well on training data but poorly on testing data, so techniques like data augmentation and dropout were used.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Successfully developed a CNN-based skin disease detection model.
Built a working system that can classify skin disease images.
Applied machine learning concepts to a real healthcare problem.
Improved model performance through experimentation and optimization.
This project demonstrates the potential of AI in assisting healthcare diagnosis.
