Inspiration

Everybody had that one time when they were stuck at home, searching up exactly how a certain chemical looked like or how anteaters have such long tongues. We have faced the same problem with our science educations and wanted to make it easier and accessible to all the students in the world.

What it does

Our website enables students to find any 3D model or simulation of any known animal or chemical. What is unique about the website is that it is able to generate these 3D models on the spot, without any previous programming. By utilizing images online as well as any preexisting data, the website can generate 3D models that will hopefully evolve the way visualization is made and enhance the learning experience of people from all around the world.

How I built it

We used a combination of HTML, CSS, and Java to create the visualization program as well as the website.

Challenges I ran into

A challenge we ran into was obtaining the necessary data in order to create the 3D models. Since we had to create a 3D model from 2D pictures, we also had a tough time trying to create the simulation.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I am quite proud of the 3D simulation software that we created because it allows users to see animals and chemicals more in depth. This type of technology is unprecedented in other online database and I believe will truly enhance the learning experience for students.

What I learned

I learned a lot about 3D graphics as well as data scraping from other databases and websites.

What's next for Skim

In the future, my team and I hope to integrate artificial intelligence and machine learning into Skim. One feature that we have planned for is the ability for our program to create the simulations on the spot without any preinstalled data or other simulations. Instead, it will data scrape and build on the spot!
