Inspiration
Many students and job seekers struggle to understand whether they are truly industry-ready. While numerous resume analyzers exist, most only point out flaws without providing actionable guidance. We wanted to build an AI-powered career companion that not only evaluates a resume but also guides users toward their next career milestone. This led to the creation of SkillTwin AI — a personalized AI Career Twin that helps users understand where they stand and how to grow.
What it does
SkillTwin AI transforms a resume into a personalized digital career twin.
Users upload their resume and receive:
Career Readiness Score ATS Compatibility Score Learning Velocity Score Skill Gap Analysis Personalized Project Recommendations Career Path Suggestions Learning Resources AI-Generated Interview Questions ATS Improvement Suggestions Customized Learning Roadmap
Instead of simply analyzing resumes, SkillTwin AI provides a complete growth strategy tailored to each user.
How we built it
We built SkillTwin AI using:
Frontend Next.js React TypeScript Tailwind CSS Backend Next.js API Routes AI Layer OpenRouter API GPT OSS 120B model Resume Processing pdf-parse-fixed for extracting text from uploaded resumes Storage Supabase Storage for resume uploads Deployment Vercel
The workflow begins with resume upload, followed by PDF text extraction, AI-powered analysis, structured JSON generation, and finally visualization through an interactive dashboard.
Challenges we ran into
During development, we encountered several technical challenges:
PDF parsing issues caused by incompatible libraries and missing Node.js dependencies. OpenRouter model availability errors that required switching to supported models. Handling inconsistent AI responses and ensuring valid JSON output. Designing prompts that generated meaningful and personalized recommendations instead of generic advice. Building a dashboard that could dynamically adapt to varying AI-generated outputs.
Overcoming these challenges helped us create a more robust and reliable platform.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Successfully built an end-to-end AI-powered career guidance platform. Generated personalized career insights from a simple resume upload. Implemented ATS scoring, skill gap analysis, interview preparation, and career roadmaps in a single workflow. Created a clean and intuitive dashboard that presents complex career intelligence in an easy-to-understand format. Delivered a working MVP capable of providing real value to students and job seekers.
What we learned
Through this project, we gained hands-on experience with:
Prompt engineering for structured AI outputs Resume parsing and document processing Building scalable AI-powered applications Integrating LLM APIs into production workflows Designing user-centric dashboards Handling AI reliability and output validation
Most importantly, we learned that the real value of AI lies not just in analysis, but in providing actionable guidance.
What's next for SkillTwin AI
Our vision is to evolve SkillTwin AI into a comprehensive AI Career Operating System.
Future plans include:
Resume Version Tracking and Progress Comparison Real-Time Job Matching AI Mock Interviews with Feedback Recruiter Mode for Candidate Evaluation Industry Benchmarking Against Top Candidates Personalized Certification Recommendations Career Progress Analytics AI Career Chat Assistant Exportable Career Reports Multi-language Support
We envision a future where every learner has a personalized AI Career Twin guiding them throughout their professional journey.
