SkillSync

Inspiration

Job hunting in today’s competitive market is tough, and automated Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) often reject qualified candidates simply because their resumes lack specific target keywords. We built SkillSync to solve this problem by giving job seekers an instant, clear view of how well their resume aligns with any target job posting before they submit an application.

What it does

SkillSync is an AI-powered resume and job description skill matcher. Users paste their raw resume text alongside a target job description, click Analyze Match, and instantly receive:

• An overall Match Score Percentage evaluating candidate fit.
• A count of Matching Skill Keywords found across both texts.
• An itemized list of Missing Key Terms that candidates should add to optimize their resume for ATS filters.

How we built it

• Frontend & UI: Built with Streamlit to create a clean, responsive, and user-friendly web interface.
• Core Logic: Written in Python using Regular Expressions (RegEx) to parse, clean, and tokenize technical terms, tools, and skills from unstructured text inputs.
• Data Processing: Leveraged Pandas and set operations to perform fast keyword gap analysis and dynamically calculate skill overlap percentages.

Challenges we ran into

Filtering out common conversational language and stop-words while keeping compound technical terms intact (such as REST APIs, Google Cloud, and Full-Stack) was a primary challenge. Fine-tuning token extraction with RegEx ensured the matcher accurately recognized specific skills without generating false positives.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

• Built a fast, intuitive web application that processes raw text and renders dynamic visual feedback in seconds.
• Successfully isolated skill gaps to provide clear, actionable insights for job seekers optimizing their resumes.

What we learned

We gained valuable experience in building streamlined NLP text-parsing algorithms, designing intuitive UI layouts in Streamlit, and structuring end-to-end data pipelines for real-time text matching.

What's next for SkillSync

• Direct .pdf and .docx document upload support.
• Integration with Gemini API to offer automated bullet-point rewriting based on identified skill gaps.
• Downloadable PDF summary reports for career counseling and trackable progress over time.
