🚀 Inspiration

In a world of remote work, gig culture, and global freelancing, many skilled professionals struggle to connect locally in meaningful, mutually beneficial ways. We were inspired to build SkillSwapX as a hyperlocal barter economy for digital nomads, freelancers, and remote workers — where people can trade skills like “design for dev,” “marketing for mentorship,” or “copywriting for code” — without cash.

It’s not just about swapping skills, but building community, reputation, and impact, all on your own terms.

🧠 What it does

SkillSwapX is a Progressive Web App that lets users:

📍 Discover nearby professionals offering or seeking skills
🔁 Create “Swap Offers” to trade skills without cash
🧬 Use AI to recommend fair swaps and detect scammy deals
✅ Log transactions and build a verified trust profile
🔄 Track and manage active swaps
📱 Access the platform offline via PWA support

Everything happens locally, transparently, and skill-for-skill.

🛠 How we built it

Frontend: Built using Bolt.new with React, Ionic, and Tailwind CSS
Backend: Powered by Supabase (auth, database, storage)
AI Logic: OpenAI GPT-4o for recommendation, evaluation, and fraud detection
Realtime Data: Supabase’s PostgreSQL with row-level security
Deployment: Netlify with continuous integration
Extras: Cloudflare for DNS + security, Markdown-based dynamic rule management, Vitest for testing

We aimed for a lean, modular stack that could be expanded into a serious MVP post-hackathon.

⚔️ Challenges we ran into

Structuring skill data and swaps fairly — we built a point-based system but reworked it into a trust-based ledger to better fit barter logic.
Integrating GPT-4o intelligently without overloading our UX
Managing location services without violating privacy
Enabling proper offline PWA support within a tight dev window

Expand to coliving spaces, co-working hubs, and startup incubators
Monetize with premium features: visibility boosts, swap insurance, and AI-generated profile summaries
