Swap skills, not money. SkillSwap is a platform where people exchange talents and time instead of cash.
Story
Learning new skills shouldn't require paying a fee or studying alone. SkillSwap reimagines learning as a social game. Users exchange knowledge, grow their skill sets, participate in daily challenges, and earn recognition, all within a community-first environment. With the help of my KI Coder, I was able to bring this vision to life more quickly than I ever could have done alone. It handled the complexities of user flows, reward logic, and matching algorithms, allowing me to focus on creating an engaging, gamified experience that motivates people to teach and learn every day. SkillSwap makes peer-to-peer learning accessible, fun, and rewarding, demonstrating what’s possible when AI and human creativity collaborate.
Inspiration
The idea came from watching countless people with valuable skills lack access to others simply because of financial barriers. I wanted to bring back the old-school barter system with modern design and smart matchmaking.
What it does
SkillSwap lets users create profiles listing the skills they offer and what they want to learn. Matches are made based on mutual interest, and users can chat, schedule, and rate one another.
How we built it
We built it with React, Supabase, OpenRouter API (for skill matching & chat assist), Tailwind CSS, and Vercel. All logic is handled on the frontend or via Supabase’s edge functions. SkillSwap currently showcases its core features using mock data and a serverless approach, focusing fully on the matching and growth tools. The next step is integrating Supabase for persistent user profiles, live skill trades, and a thriving community ecosystem.
Challenges we ran into
Designing a fair and intuitive swap system without financial transactions was tough. We had to get creative with reputation metrics and user trust design.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
SkillSwap feels like a true community tool. It brings people together around learning and sharing, not money. The AI skill matcher also makes it easier for new users to find value immediately.
What we learned
We learned how to create systems of trust without relying on payments, and how important simple communication flows are for communities.
What's next for SkillSwap
Next steps include gamification, referral programs, token-less badges, and event-based local swaps with QR check-ins.
