🌟 Inspiration
We noticed that while millions of people want to learn new skills, online courses are often expensive or impersonal. At the same time, everyone has at least one skill they could teach. We were inspired to build SkillSwap so people could exchange knowledge instead of money, creating a global learning community.
💡 What it does
SkillSwap is a mobile/web app where users teach one skill to earn credits and spend credits to learn another skill. It matches learners and teachers, supports live sessions, and uses a reputation system to keep quality high.
🛠️ How we built it
We designed wireframes and mockups in Figma/Canva, outlined the credit system using simple economic formulas, and built a prototype concept deck with Gamma AI. We also ran quick user surveys to shape our feature set.
🚧 Challenges we ran into
- Designing a fair credit system for exchanging lessons.
- Ensuring lesson quality without discouraging new users.
- Balancing a simple, clean UI with powerful matching features.
🏆 Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Creating a unique barter-style learning model.
- Building an easy-to-understand pitch deck that highlights both business and user impact.
- Producing initial mockups that show how the app would actually look and feel.
📚 What we learned
- How to map out a clear value proposition and user journey.
- How to combine design thinking, business modelling, and technology planning.
- That even simple math (e.g., (C_{\text{earned}} = C_{\text{taught}})) can help explain our concept.
🚀 What's next for SkillSwap – Learn Anything by Teaching Something
- Develop a minimum viable product (MVP) with matching + video chat.
- Pilot with a small student/freelancer community to test engagement.
- Add AI-powered skill recommendations and verified teacher badges.
- Explore partnerships with universities or training platforms to scale.
