Inspiration
Students often know valuable skills but struggle to find the right person to learn from. At the same time, many students want to learn new skills but do not know where to find someone who can teach them.
We wanted to create a simple platform where students can exchange knowledge instead of simply consuming courses. This inspired us to build SkillSwap — a student-to-student skill exchange platform that connects people based on what they can teach and what they want to learn.
What we built
SkillSwap allows students to create a simple profile by entering a skill they can teach and a skill they want to learn.
The app then presents an AI-powered matching experience that considers the compatibility between the two learning goals. After finding a match, students can connect and start a structured learning session.
The experience is designed around a simple flow:
- Create your skill profile.
- Find a compatible skill partner.
- See why the match works.
- Connect with your partner.
- Follow an AI-generated learning session.
- Complete the session and receive feedback.
How we built it
We built SkillSwap as a native Android application using Kotlin and Jetpack Compose.
Firebase is used for authentication and the backend infrastructure. Google Sign-In allows users to authenticate securely without creating another password.
The interface was designed with a clean blue, white and black visual system, with animated transitions and card-based layouts to make the experience feel modern and easy to navigate.
The AI layer is designed around Google's Gemini ecosystem to support intelligent skill matching and personalized learning-session generation.
Challenges we faced
One of our biggest challenges was turning the idea of skill exchange into a simple user experience rather than making it feel like another social network or learning platform.
We also had to work through Android development, Firebase authentication, UI development and the integration of AI concepts while working under a very limited development timeline.
Another challenge was making the experience feel like a complete product even while building a hackathon MVP. We focused on creating a clear end-to-end journey so that a user can understand the value of SkillSwap within a few minutes.
What we learned
This project taught us how to move from an idea to a functional mobile prototype while combining Android development, cloud services and AI.
We also learned that good AI products are not only about the AI model itself. The surrounding user experience, the quality of the inputs and the way the AI result is presented are equally important.
What's next
We plan to expand SkillSwap with real-time student discovery, persistent user profiles, smarter Gemini-powered matching, personalized session coaching, progress tracking, ratings and a larger community of learners and teachers.
Our long-term goal is to make skill exchange accessible beyond a single institution and create a global community where students can learn from each other.
