Inspiration
We wanted to explore how a TV could become more than just a device for watching content. Learning is often limited by small screens, distracting environments, or complicated interfaces. Since Fire TV is already designed for a large-screen, remote-friendly experience, we saw an opportunity to turn it into a simple and interactive learning companion.
This idea led us to build SkillStream AI, an AI-powered learning experience designed specifically for the TV.
What We Built
SkillStream AI allows users to choose a learning topic and interact with AI-generated lessons, questions, and quizzes directly from their TV.
The experience is designed around a simple TV interface so that users can navigate comfortably using a remote. Instead of requiring a laptop or phone, the goal is to make learning feel natural on a large screen.
The application includes:
- Topic-based learning sessions
- AI-generated explanations
- Interactive quizzes
- Progress tracking
- A TV-friendly navigation experience
- An AI layer connected to AWS services
We also focused on keeping the interface simple because TV applications need to be much easier to navigate than traditional web applications.
How We Built It
We built the application using web-based technologies suitable for the Fire TV environment and structured the project into separate UI, learning, and AI components.
The frontend handles the TV interface and navigation, while the backend manages AI-related requests and learning content. AWS services are used as part of the AI/backend workflow.
A major part of the development process was adapting a familiar learning application into a 10-foot user interface. Buttons, text, spacing, navigation focus, and information density all had to work well from a distance.
We also designed the project so that additional learning topics and AI capabilities can be added without rebuilding the entire application.
What We Learned
One of our biggest learnings was that building for TV is very different from building for a phone or desktop.
A good TV experience is not simply a website displayed on a larger screen. Navigation needs to be predictable, important information needs to be visible from a distance, and every interaction needs to work naturally with a remote.
We also learned how to integrate AI into a focused product experience rather than using AI simply as a chatbot. The AI is used to generate and support the actual learning workflow.
Working with AWS services also helped us understand how cloud-based AI capabilities can be connected to an application while keeping the product architecture modular.
Challenges
Our biggest challenge was designing an interface that felt natural with a remote control. We had to think carefully about focus states, navigation order, text size, and how much information should appear on one screen.
Another challenge was connecting the AI functionality to the learning experience while keeping responses useful and understandable. We wanted the AI to support learning rather than overwhelm the user with long responses.
We also had to balance functionality with the limited time available for a hackathon. Instead of trying to build dozens of features, we focused on creating a complete core experience that could actually be demonstrated from beginning to end.
What's Next
SkillStream AI could eventually become a broader learning platform for TV, supporting personalized learning paths, voice-based interaction, multiple difficulty levels,
