Inspiration

SkillsMaxxing is a website that helps anyone find helpful links to the skills they need to succeed in their career fields. We noticed many students often struggle to pinpoint exactly what they would like to pursue, or how to find the skills required for their interest. SkillsMaxxing is a platform for anyone to find and practice skills. Students can find out what they're interested in, and eventually pursue these skills until they can bring their own ideas to life. It's a great and authentic app that provides users with an all-in-one website to maxx out their skills!

What it does

The website provides a quick quiz to help users figure out which topics a user may be interested in and finds well-known, reliable, and easy-to-understand resources that they can utilize to further their= understanding of a concept. Our website is meant to localize all the tools needed to hone a skill, where one would typically search online for resources without knowing where to start.

How we built it

We built this app on with React framework and components, which were coded in HTML, CSS, JavaScript. We also had a YouTube API find relevant videos based on a topic, which was implemented with an API key.

Challenges we ran into

Some members were unfamiliar to coding and GitHub, which tested our perseverance and patience as a group, as well as our adaptability to new skills individually. None of us had worked with APIs before, and learning to do so within a week has been an impressive feat.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are very proud of how everything came together! From our initial planning to actually coding, we successfully found the right color schemes, the fluidity of the navigation, the use of APIs, and an interaction with Max the parrot. We still have many ideas to improve our project, but working step-by-step to get closer to a finished product has felt very rewarding!

What we learned

We learned to design a website with more features and use APIs to create a customized search, which was challenging and fun!

What's next for SkillsMaxxing

We have a lot of plans to expand our prototype. Since the website is meant for anyone, whether sure or unsure of their path, we want to include a more in-depth quiz, similar to a career quiz, so that students not only learn new skills, but complete projects alongside their learning. The next feature we'd include would be different experience levels (right now, our MVP is working on the assumption that everyone is a beginner). The students' path would be more geared to their specific interest and they'd be able to easily track their completed courses. Another feature would scrap the internet for resources free to those with a student ID, which would allow more cost-effective solutions for those who want to dive much deeper into their subject.
