Challenges we ran into

Inspiration

67% of Kenyan youth are unemployed, yet millions have skills: design, writing, coding, braiding. The gap? They don't know how to get their first paying customer. Laptops are rare, but phones + M-Pesa are everywhere. We asked: "What if shipping a business was as easy as a WhatsApp challenge?"

What it does

SkillShip Africa is a 7-day WhatsApp challenge. Day 1: Pick a skill. Day 7: Land your first M-Pesa customer. Novus AI acts as a daily coach, sending tasks, templates, and accountability nudges. No apps to download. No laptop needed. Just chat.

How we built it

We used Google Docs to create the 7-day playbook with daily tasks, message templates, and M-Pesa pitch scripts. Novus AI was configured as the "coach" to deliver the playbook content, track progress, and handle Q&A. The entire flow was tested on WhatsApp with real users.

Challenges we ran into

  1. No-code constraint: Had to deliver value without building an app. Solved it with Google Docs + AI chat.
  2. User trust: Youth fear scams. We built in M-Pesa proof and small daily wins to build confidence.
  3. Novus access delay: While waiting for API access, we built the full logic in Docs to prove the concept works.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Built a working MVP in 48 hours that solves a real Kenyan problem. Designed for 40M+ Kenyans with only a phone. Created a system where a user can go from zero to paid in 7 days.

What we learned

The best tech for Africa isn't the most complex - it's the most accessible. WhatsApp + M-Pesa beats any custom app. AI coaches can replace expensive mentors if designed with empathy and clear daily actions.
