Inspiration
Inspired by the dual challenges of increasing loneliness among the elderly and the erosion of generational skills, SkillSages was conceived as a bridge between generations. Our goal is to create a platform where older adults find companionship and purpose in sharing the rich tapestry of skills and wisdom they've accumulated over a lifetime, thereby passing on a living legacy to younger adults eager to learn and connect.
What it does
SkillSages is a community-driven platform that enables older adults to share their life-long skills and wisdom with younger generations. From crafts, cooking, and gardening to life lessons and personal development skills, the app facilitates meaningful mentorship relationships, enriching lives on both sides of the generational divide.
How we built it
Leveraging ReactJS, we crafted an intuitive and accessible user interface to engage users of all ages. The backend, built with Python, provides a solid foundation for managing user interactions and data, supported by a PostgreSQL database for robust information storage. Our development process prioritized ease of use to ensure older adults feel comfortable navigating and sharing on our platform.
Challenges we ran into
Creating a user experience welcoming to both tech-savvy youth and less digitally experienced older adults posed a significant challenge. We also grappled with building a matching algorithm that respects the diverse interests and skills of our users, ensuring enriching and valuable exchanges. Ensuring privacy and safety in these intergenerational connections was paramount, adding another layer of complexity to our development efforts.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are most proud of fostering genuine connections across generations, directly contributing to the reduction of loneliness among older adults. Witnessing the transfer of invaluable knowledge and the formation of lasting bonds has been profoundly rewarding. Successfully balancing accessibility with comprehensive features also stands as a major achievement for our team.

We aim to partner with organizations focused on aging and education to deepen our impact and further combat loneliness among older adults while preserving and passing on their legacy to future generations.
