Inspiration
Every year, millions of students and job seekers make decisions with incomplete information.
- Students manually search universities and miss programs they qualify for
- Job seekers scroll endlessly through listings without knowing what they’re actually close to landing
In both cases, the problem is the same:
👉 People don’t know what opportunities they already have, or what small improvements would unlock significantly more.
The system is fragmented, opaque, and reactive.
We built Skills Bridge to turn both education and career pathways into a clear, optimized journey.
What It Does
Skills Bridge is an AI-powered platform that shows you:
- What opportunities you qualify for right now (universities or jobs)
- What you're closest to unlocking next
- Exactly what to do to maximize your options
It works across two tracks in one unified product:
🎓 Student Track for University admissions
💼 Career Track for Job matching and skill progression
At its core, Skills Bridge answers:
- Where do I stand today?
- What can I access right now?
- What should I improve to unlock the most opportunities?
How It Works
1. Profile Extraction (Unified Input Layer)
We convert unstructured user data into a structured, comparable profile.
For students:
- Upload marksheets (OCR + LLM extraction) or enter manually
- Select target career → mapped to relevant majors
For job seekers:
- Upload resume/CV
- Extract skills, experience, education, and signals
We normalize everything into a standard format:
- GPA (4.0 scale)
- Subjects → global equivalents
- Skills → standardized taxonomy
- Test scores → unified format
Output: A clean profile usable across both education and career matching.
2. Opportunity Matching Engine
🎓 University Matching
We evaluate student profiles against structured program requirements:
- GPA thresholds
- Required subjects
- Test scores
- Deadlines & constraints
Programs are grouped into:
- ✅ Eligible
- ⚡ Almost There (missing 1-2 requirements)
💼 Job Matching
We ingest job postings and extract:
- Required skills
- Experience levels
- Qualifications
Each resume is evaluated against job requirements:
- ✔ Has required skills
- ✖ Missing key skill (e.g. React, SQL, AWS)
- ✖ Experience gap
Jobs are grouped into:
- ✅ Ready to Apply
- ⚡ Close Matches (skill gaps)
3. Bridge the Gap (Core Innovation)
This is where Skills Bridge becomes an optimization engine, not just a matching tool.
We analyze all “almost there” opportunities and identify high-leverage improvements.
Example (Student):
- 41 programs identified
- 28 require IELTS 7.0 → priority #1
Example (Job Seeker):
- 35 jobs identified
- 22 require SQL → priority #1
- 15 require React → priority #2
We generate a ranked roadmap:
- What to improve
- In what order
- Estimated effort/time
- Number of opportunities unlocked
Result:
Users don’t just improve randomly, they improve strategically, maximizing outcomes with minimal effort.
Why It’s Different
Most platforms are static:
- Job boards → show listings
- University platforms → show programs
Skills Bridge is dynamic:
👉 It tells you how to unlock more opportunities fastest
This shift from discovery → optimization is the core innovation.
Even more importantly:
👉 It unifies education → career progression into one continuous system
How We Built It
Architecture
- Frontend: React (via Figma Make)
- Backend: FastAPI (Python)
- AI Layer: OpenAI + Codex for extraction and reasoning
- Data Sources: University criteria + job market data (TinyFish)
Key Systems
- OCR + LLM pipeline (transcripts + resumes)
- Structured requirement extraction (programs + jobs)
- Matching engine (rule-based + AI-assisted)
- Gap prioritization algorithm (impact-weighted ranking)
Challenges We Ran Into
- Unstructured and inconsistent data across universities and job postings
- Standardizing academic and skill data into one unified model
- Limited access to AI tools during development
- Building two tracks (education + jobs) within hackathon constraints
Accomplishments We’re Proud Of
- Built a dual-track system (students + job seekers) in one product
- Created a working pipeline:
profile → matching → gap analysis → roadmap
- Turned vague advice into quantified, prioritized action steps
- Delivered a product that helps users make better strategic decisions, not just browse options
What We Learned
- The real problem isn’t access to opportunities, it’s knowing how to reach them
- Matching is valuable, but prioritization is transformative
- Education and career pathways are deeply connected, solving them together is far more powerful
- AI works best when paired with structured logic and constraints
What’s Next for Skills Bridge
- Integrate with platforms like eTest to reach active student pipelines
- Expand job dataset coverage and real-time ingestion
- Add personalized learning resources tied to each gap (courses, prep material)
- Introduce progress tracking and adaptive roadmap updates
- Gamify skill progression to increase retention
- Expand into a full lifelong career navigation platform
One-Line Summary
Skills Bridge is an opportunity optimization engine, helping students and job seekers not just find opportunities, but unlock the maximum number of them with the least effort.
