Inspiration
In a few years, AI technology will make a big change to the world. A lot of people will lost their jobs, so I want to build something that help people learn new skills depend on the old skillsets or experience they already have. Especially for people who are under educated, once they lost their job because their skills is no longer needed, they really need a way to learn new skills in order to adapt the new environment.
What it does
1, Get user input of their background and interested job keywords 2, Search on the recent job market base on the user input 3, Analyze job market data from the internet, find out whats the most needed skills 4, Base on user background, match the skill that user can learn in a few days (example: if you have experience in Java, you can learn Python really fast) 5, Output the matched skill and a detailed guideline to the user 6, In the future, if I am still working on this project, I will find a way to output customized full learning materials to the user, imagine you can learn a new useful skill in 3 days by just following the learning guidelines and the materials.
How we built it
For the demo, I use Apify API to get job data from indeed, then use llama_index and GPT4 to process the data and generate the guideline.
Challenges we ran into
1, I am building this by myself, have to do all the research, codings and debugs, I wasn't even sure if I could finish the demo by the deadline. 2, When processing the data, it costs more than $10 openai credits each run, but I found out I can remove a lot of repeated data, and lower the cost to about $3, in the future, if we have enough user using it, we can reuse the similar user background data to lower the cost. 3, I am still thinking about the matching algorithm I should use when matching skills, right now I am just rely on GPT4 (I think I will find out if I have some more time). 4, I need a way to analyze the job description data, to extract the skills needed from the data (I think I will find out if I have some more time) 5, I need better prompt for query engine, so that GPT4 can generate better output. (need more practice and learn)
Accomplishments that we're proud of
My first time actually build something I think is meaningful for the world. I graduated from Berkeley last year but I couldn't find a job because of the hiring freeze all over the world. I have to work full time in WholeFoodsMarket as a regular team member for my family's living. I doubted myself, I graduated from one of the best universities in the world, but I could only work in somewhere everyone can work without experice. I didn't look for any teamate because I really don't know what I could do for the team because I almost don't have any experience except for what I learned from school. The moment I finish the demo, I find my confidence back that I have lost, I prove to myself that I didn't waste my time in school
What we learned
I learned how to do research, use APIs, read documentations, and ask mentor for advice.
What's next for SkillPro
If I get some acknowledgement, I will look for teamates and build a start up. I really think this project can help a lot of people who need to learn more skills but don't know how to learn.
