SkillPilot AI: Intelligent Career Copilot

💡 Inspiration

Engineering students often struggle to decide what they should focus on next to achieve their career goals. With countless courses, technologies, projects, and internship opportunities available, choosing the right next step can be overwhelming. We created SkillPilot AI to transform career guidance from generic chatbot responses into intelligent, personalized, action-oriented assistance.

🚀 What It Does

SkillPilot AI is an AI-powered career development agent that helps students identify skill gaps, discover relevant projects, generate personalized learning roadmaps, explore internships, and prepare for technical interviews.

Unlike a conventional chatbot, SkillPilot AI focuses on deciding the most appropriate next action for a student's request.

🛠️ How We Built It

We designed SkillPilot AI around two key technologies:

Strands Decider 2B: Makes meaningful tool-selection decisions based on the user's request and relevant context.
Amazon Bedrock: Generates personalized explanations, learning plans, project recommendations, and career guidance.
Strands Agents SDK: Orchestrates the agent's workflow and connects decisions with the appropriate tools.
React.js: Provides an interactive, responsive user interface.
Python and FastAPI: Power the backend, decision engine, APIs, and tool execution.

The agent selects an appropriate action, validates the decision, executes the corresponding tool, and presents the resulting recommendations to the student.

📚 What We Learned

Building SkillPilot AI helped us explore AI agent architecture, decision-making models, tool orchestration, generative AI integration, API development, and the importance of separating decision-making from content generation.

We also learned how to design reusable decision patterns that other developers can adapt to their own agents.

⚡ Challenges We Faced

One of our main challenges was integrating a specialized decision model into an agent workflow while keeping the system reliable and understandable. We also focused on handling uncertain decisions, validating tool selections, managing model configuration, and distinguishing real AI responses from fallback results.
