Inspiration
The inspiration for this project came from a question posed in a tweet that revealed a simple but frustrating truth: in Africa, many brilliant ideas die not because they lack merit but because the individual behind the idea lacks money.
Startups across the continent face an uphill battle, with funding constraints severely limiting access to computing resources, technical expertise, and scalable infrastructure.
So I thought, what if we could rethink the problem? What if instead of chasing capital to build solutions, we could collaborate based on something we already have in excess--skills?
What it does
It is a web-first mobile-responsive prototype that allows developers and problem solvers on the continent to collaborate. At its core, it is a matching algorithm designed to facilitate high-value, peer-to-peer collaboration in a low-resource environment.
How we built it
Thus far, just the demo, and I built it with Figma.
Challenges we ran into
Finding money to pay for Figma. No, honestly, as a freelancer, $23.20 is quite a bit of money, especially when you convert to Kenya shillings (Ksh. 3016)
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Learning how to use Figma in 2 days and creating a decent demo. Design is not my thing (I am not visual at all). As a writer, words are my thing. But as a solo founder, I had to grit my teeth and figure it out anyway. Incredibly proud of that. ,
What we learned
Through this project, I have learned how deeply interconnected resource constraints are. Indirect constraints like funding can still affect (and to a very large extent) things like compute, memory and optimization techniques.
What's next for OmoaX
An MVP! Well, and the matching algorithm. I see a future that has a lot of Calculus.
