Inspiration

Learning a new skill or preparing for a career can often feel overwhelming. There are countless tutorials, courses, technologies, and projects available online, but it can be difficult to know what to learn, in what order, and what to build to actually apply those skills.

That inspired me to create SkillBuilder, an AI-powered career development platform designed to turn a user's career goal into a structured and personalized learning journey. Instead of simply recommending resources, SkillBuilder helps users understand what they should learn next, build projects to apply their knowledge, and track their progress along the way.

What it does

SkillBuilder creates a personalized career development experience based on a user's goals and existing skills.

Users can:

  • Create a career profile based on their target role and current skills.
  • Generate a personalized AI-powered learning roadmap divided into stages, skills, and tasks.
  • Complete roadmap tasks and track their learning progress.
  • Earn XP as they progress through their career journey.
  • Generate personalized project ideas that allow them to apply the skills they are learning.
  • Track and complete projects through interactive checklists.
  • Chat with an AI Mentor that understands their career goal and roadmap and can provide relevant guidance.
  • View their overall progress through a centralized dashboard.

The goal is to make career development feel less like searching through endless resources and more like following a clear, personalized path.

How we built it

SkillBuilder was built as a full-stack web application using modern web technologies.

Frontend

  • Next.js
  • React
  • TypeScript
  • Tailwind CSS
  • Lucide React for icons and interface elements

Backend

  • Next.js API routes for server-side functionality and REST-style APIs
  • MongoDB for storing users, career profiles, roadmaps, projects, and progress
  • Mongoose for database modelling and validation

Authentication & Security

  • JWT-based authentication
  • bcryptjs for password hashing
  • HTTP-only cookies for authentication
  • Password reset functionality
  • Email functionality using Nodemailer

Artificial Intelligence

SkillBuilder integrates the Google Gemini API to power its AI features.

Gemini is provided with information about the user's career goals, existing skills, roadmap, and progress so that it can generate more personalized responses rather than generic recommendations.

AI is used for features such as:

  • Career roadmap generation
  • Personalized project generation
  • AI mentorship and career guidance

I also designed the application so that the different features share context. For example, the AI Mentor can use information from the user's active career profile and roadmap when answering questions.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was designing the application so that all of its features worked together rather than behaving like separate tools. Career profiles, roadmaps, tasks, projects, XP, and the AI Mentor all needed to share information while remaining organized and maintainable.

Another challenge was integrating Gemini effectively. Instead of simply sending a user's question to an AI model, I needed to construct useful context from their career profile and roadmap so that responses could actually be relevant to their learning journey.

Authentication was another important challenge. I implemented registration, login, JWT authentication, protected routes, password hashing, forgot-password functionality, and secure session handling.

Finally, designing the roadmap and project systems required balancing flexibility with structure. AI-generated content needed to be stored in a predictable format so that it could be displayed as interactive tasks and tracked throughout the application.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I'm particularly proud that SkillBuilder became more than just an AI chatbot. It combines AI generation, structured learning, project-based practice, and progress tracking into one connected platform.

Some of the accomplishments I'm most proud of include:

  • Building a complete authentication and account management system.
  • Creating personalized AI-generated career roadmaps.
  • Building an interactive roadmap where users can complete tasks and track progress.
  • Developing an XP system that rewards users as they learn.
  • Generating personalized projects based on a user's career journey.
  • Creating an AI Mentor that can understand the user's roadmap and provide contextual guidance.
  • Connecting the frontend, backend, database, authentication, and AI systems into one full-stack application.

What we learned

Building SkillBuilder taught me a lot about designing a larger full-stack application where multiple systems depend on each other.

I gained more experience with Next.js, React, TypeScript, MongoDB, Mongoose, authentication, API design, and AI integration.

One of my biggest takeaways was learning that integrating AI into an application involves much more than simply calling an API. The quality of the experience depends heavily on the context provided to the model, prompt design, data structure, validation, and how AI-generated information is integrated into the rest of the application.

I also learned more about designing database models and application architecture that can support features that evolve as a project grows.

What's next for SkillBuilder

There are many ways I would like to expand SkillBuilder in the future.

Some of the next features I would like to explore include:

  • An AI resume reviewer that compares a user's resume with their target career.
  • More advanced progress analytics and learning insights.
  • Smarter project recommendations based on completed roadmap skills.
  • Improved roadmap regeneration and customization.
  • Resource recommendations for individual roadmap topics.
  • More detailed career readiness tracking.
  • Support for multiple career paths and easier switching between them.

Ultimately, I want SkillBuilder to evolve into a platform that can guide someone from "I want to become this" to "I now have the skills and projects to prove it."
