Inspiration
Around the world, countless underprivileged students lack access to essential academic support because their families simply can’t afford expensive private tutoring. Many of these students struggle to keep up in school, not because they lack ability or motivation, but because they lack resources and support. We built SkillBridge to bridge this gap—connecting students in need with volunteer tutors, empowering every learner to get help, ask questions, and build confidence regardless of socioeconomic background.
What it does
SkillBridge is a web platform that connects students needing academic help with volunteer tutors. It provides an easy-to-use interface for students to request help in subjects like math or science, and for tutors to browse and accept requests based on their expertise and availability. Secure text-based chat, personalized dashboards, and a feedback system make learning interactive and impactful.
How we built it
Frontend: React Backend: Node.js Database: PostgreSQL Authentication: JWT with demo Google OAuth Styling: Custom CSS featuring glassmorphism and responsive design Built as a full-stack app with a separate client and server directory, communicating securely via REST API
Challenges we ran into
Crafting a flexible database schema to accommodate current and future feature needs
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Successfully launching a fully functional MVP that enables students and volunteers to connect Creating a smooth user experience with mobile responsiveness and modern UI effects
What we learned
How to manage state, routing, and context effectively in React Working with PostgreSQL to model complex relational data
What's next for SkillBridge
Adding real-time chat with Socket.io for more dynamic sessions Introducing voice and video chat capabilities Implementing a calendar scheduler and session reminders Expanding admin dashboards and parental controls to further ensure safety and accountability Launching outreach initiatives to reach more underprivileged students globally
