Project Story: SkillBridge AI

Inspiration

SkillBridge AI was born out of the realization that education alone doesn’t guarantee meaningful careers for youth. Many young people, especially aged 15–29, face outdated systems, limited mentorship, financial barriers, and mental health challenges. We wanted to create a platform that bridges these gaps — where AI, community, and micro-scholarships come together to empower the next generation.

What it does

SkillBridge AI is an EduTech platform powered by AI that:

  • Generates personalized roadmaps for any career or skill goal.
  • Rewards learners with micro-scholarships as they complete milestones.
  • Connects youth to mentors and peers through a community hub.
  • Offers an AI wellness companion to support healthy learning habits.
  • Provides an impact dashboard so users can track achievements and showcase them to employers.

How we built it

We focused on building a practical MVP with a balance of simplicity and scalability.

  • Frontend: React, Vite, TypeScript, Tailwind CSS for a fast, responsive, mobile-first UI.
  • Backend/API Integrations: Supabase (PostgreSQL, authentication, storage) for data and auth; OpenRouter for AI roadmap generation and chatbot support.

We designed the structure around modular components, contexts for state management, and services for interacting with Supabase and AI APIs.

Challenges we ran into

  • Structuring AI-generated roadmaps so they are realistic and actionable, not just generic steps.
  • Designing the micro-scholarship wallet system while ensuring transparency and safety.
  • Managing authentication and database setup across Supabase with row-level security.
  • Building responsibly around sensitive areas like wellness support.

Accomplishments we're proud of

  • Built a functional end-to-end MVP that integrates learning, mentorship, funding, and wellness.
  • Created a clean, modular project structure ready for expansion.
  • Designed an impact-driven database schema that tracks profiles, roadmaps, mentorship requests, and community posts.
  • Successfully integrated AI tools with Supabase for a smooth developer and user experience.

What we learned

  • How to combine EduTech, FinTech, and HealthTech into one cohesive platform.
  • Importance of prompt engineering for structured AI outputs.
  • Building with Supabase taught us how to leverage Postgres + authentication + storage in one platform.
  • Designing user journeys that are community-driven and motivational.

What’s next for SkillBridge AI

  • Expand the sponsor portal so NGOs, universities, and companies can fund youth milestones.
  • Add real financial integrations (digital wallets, Stripe).
  • Run pilot programs in schools and universities to validate adoption.
  • Build an offline-first mobile app for low-connectivity regions.
  • Enhance impact verification tools to help employers trust learner achievements.
