Inspiration

We noticed millions of people in India possess valuable skills but lack access to traditional employment. At the same time, many individuals and small businesses need help but can't afford professionals. This mismatch inspired us to create SkillBridge, a platform that lets people exchange skills instead of money using AI-powered matchmaking.

What it does

SkillBridge connects users who offer a skill (like coding, cooking, or designing) with someone who needs it — and vice versa. For example, a student can build a website for a yoga trainer in exchange for yoga lessons. The platform uses AI to match users based on skill compatibility, urgency, and proximity.

How we built it

  • The frontend is built with Next.js, styled using Tailwind CSS, and animated with Framer Motion.
  • The backend uses Node.js + Express for APIs, connected to Supabase for dynamic user and skill data.
  • AI matchmaking is implemented as a Python microservice using FastAPI, integrating models built with scikit-learn.
  • User authentication uses Supabase Auth.
  • We integrated LeafLet.js for geo-tagging and local skill filtering.

Challenges we ran into

  • Designing an intuitive UI that serves both tech-savvy and less digital-native users.
  • Balancing AI complexity with real-world usability.
  • Building a fair and transparent rating system that discourages misuse.

Accomplishments we’re proud of

  • A working MVP with AI-powered matchmaking and smart scheduling.
  • Portfolio-builder that encourages users to keep building and growing.
  • A gamified ecosystem that encourages continuous learning and referrals.

What we learned

  • How to build scalable full-stack applications using the SERN stack.
  • How to integrate Python microservices with a JavaScript frontend/backend.
  • How real-world needs can be solved with tech + empathy + community.

What’s next

  • Launching a pilot in college campuses and urban communities.
  • Adding certification support and micro-payments as optional add-ons.
  • Building an Android app using Flutter for mobile-first users.
