Inspiration
Africa's talent ecosystem has a credibility gap. Despite having abundant skilled talent, 70% of employers struggle to fill jobs while millions of capable young people remain locked out of opportunities. The problem isn't lack of talent—it's lack of trust in verification systems. Having led initiatives that trained over 1M learners and placed 100K+ into jobs at companies like Andela and The Room, we witnessed this disconnect firsthand. Traditional CVs and certificates don't reflect actual ability, creating a broken hiring cycle that wastes 30-60 days per hire and costs employers $25K+ per bad hire. We founded Skilladder to solve this: What if AI could prove what talent can actually do, not just what they claim.
What it does
Skilladder is an AI-powered skills verification platform that proves what talent can actually do beyond CVs and certificates. Our platform addresses Africa's credibility gap by providing objective, culturally-intelligent skills assessment that connects verified talent with opportunity.
How we built it
Our AI-powered verification engine uses:
Multi-format assessments: Voice, multiple choice, and open-ended questions Adaptive AI algorithms: Low-bandwidth optimization with cultural relevance 2-step methodology: Baseline readiness assessment + role-specific verification Real-time analytics: Performance tracking and skills mapping dashboards Secure proctoring: End-to-end verification with industry-standard security
Technical Architecture:
Cloud-native infrastructure for scalability across Africa AI models trained on African workforce data and contexts API-first design for seamless integration with existing platforms Mobile-optimized for accessibility in emerging markets
Challenges we ran into
Technical Challenges:
Building AI that understands African cultural contexts and languages Optimizing for low-bandwidth environments while maintaining assessment quality Creating bias-reducing algorithms that promote equitable opportunities Scaling secure proctoring across diverse technological environments
Market Challenges:
Shifting employer mindset from credential-based to skills-based hiring Building trust in AI-powered assessments in traditional markets Navigating complex regulatory environments across multiple countries Competing with established but ineffective traditional assessment methods
Solutions We Developed:
Culturally-intelligent AI trained specifically on African workforce patterns Offline-capable assessment modules that sync when connectivity is available Partnership-first go-to-market strategy leveraging existing ecosystem players Proven results through government partnerships that validate our approach
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Current Traction:
50,000+ assessments completed powering our AI model $16,000 revenue from pilot phase with 3MTT partnership 1.7M Nigerians to be assessed through expanding government partnerships 85% placement success rate for verified candidates
What we learned
Through our pilot with Nigeria's 3MTT program (the country's largest training initiative), we discovered:
85% placement success rate for verified candidates vs 23% industry average Employers desperately need objective, culturally-intelligent assessment tools Skills verification must work in low-bandwidth environments across Africa Two-tier assessment (baseline + role-specific) creates the perfect balance of scale and precision
What's next for Skilladder: AI-Powered Skills Verification Platform
