Inspiration

Living in a busy urban community, I noticed so many people around me had amazing skills—from guitar lessons to sourdough baking—but struggled to share or learn without cost barriers. I wanted to build something that centered connection over cash, a space where time (not money) was the currency. That’s how Skill Swap Network was born: a way to turn "I know how to do this" into "I can learn that" for everyone in my community.

What it does

Skill Swap Network lets users publish skills they teach, browse others’ offerings, book in-person/online sessions, and track time via a Time Bank (1 hour taught = 1 hour learned). It also supports learning goals, shared materials, community events, and skill certificates for consistent learners—all 100% free.

How we built it

We started with core user flows (signup → publish skill → book session) and built a React frontend for responsive, intuitive UI. The backend (Node.js/Express) manages Time Bank logic and user data (MongoDB). We integrated Google Maps for location planning, Zoom API for online sessions, and PDFKit to auto-generate certificates. AWS hosts the platform for reliability across EU/US regions.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest hurdle was the Time Bank confirmation logic: ensuring hours only credit after both users verify a session (and resolving disputes). We also struggled with responsive map integration for mobile users and making sure event waitlist/attendance caps worked seamlessly across devices.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We built a fully functional platform where users can go from signup to earning a skill certificate without a single payment. The smart matching feature (surfacing complementary skills) has made connections feel intentional, and early testers love the zero-cost, community-focused vibe.

What we learned

We learned how to balance complex business logic (like session cancellation rules) with simple UX—Western users value clarity and ease above all. We also gained hands-on experience with third-party API integration (Google Maps/Zoom) and scaling for EU/US timezone/location needs.

What's next for this project

Next, we want to refine the smart matching (beyond rule-based logic), add web push reminders for sessions/events, and test localized event features for smaller EU/US cities. We’re also exploring optional skill validation (peer-endorsements) to boost trust in the community.
