SKILLLINK – PROJECT STORY
INSPIRATION The idea for SkillLink came from seeing how difficult it can be for people to find trusted local service providers, especially in Nigeria and other parts of Africa. Many skilled professionals remain underutilized because they lack visibility, while clients often rely on word-of-mouth or guesswork to hire help. I was inspired by the thought that technology could bridge this gap creating a platform that not only connects people to reliable, verified professionals, but also empowers those professionals to grow their businesses.
WHAT IT DOES SkillLink is a digital platform that connects individuals and businesses with skilled service providers ranging from artisans and technicians to creative professionals based on skill category, location, availability, and ratings. Key features include:
Smart matching system (manual or auto-match)
In-app wallet for secure payments
Job completion verification before fund release
Service access for non-smartphone users via USSD, SMS, or calls (planned in SkillLink Assist)
HOW WE BUILT IT
We started with market research to understand the needs of both service seekers and providers. The build process included:
Designing the user experience wireframes, workflows, and user journey mapping.
Developing the backend to handle user profiles, matching algorithms, and secure transactions.
Creating the mobile interface with simple navigation, filters, and service booking tools.
Integrating wallet functionality to ensure smooth, secure payments.
Our technology stack involves modern web and mobile frameworks, API-based payment integration, and cloud hosting for scalability.
CHALLENGES WE RAN INTO
Trust concerns: Getting users to trust a new platform with payments and service quality.
Provider verification: Building a process that’s thorough but not too time-consuming.
Connectivity barriers: Ensuring access for users with basic phones or low internet coverage. Balancing automation and human support to make the matching system both fast and accurate.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS THAT WE'RE PROUD OF Designing a verification process that increases trust between clients and providers. Developing the SkillLink wallet for secure, quick payments. Including SkillLink Assist plans so people without smartphones can still access services. Building a scalable system that can grow beyond Nigeria into other African markets.
What we learned User trust is as important as technology verification and transparency are key. Payment systems must be simple and reliable to encourage platform adoption. People value speed and accuracy in matching services, but they also want the option to choose manually. Accessibility features (like USSD and SMS) greatly expand potential user reach.
What’s next for SkillLink Launch pilot testing in selected Nigerian cities.
Expand provider categories to cover more specialized skills.
Integrate AI-powered recommendations to improve matching accuracy.
Develop SkillLink Assist into a fully operational offline-access service.
Seek partnerships with local organizations to boost user adoption and trust.
