Inspiration
Skill-IT was born from a simple observation: students are willing to learn and improve, but the resources they need are often fragmented, expensive, or difficult to access.
A student may know what career they are interested in but not know which skills to develop. Another student may already possess that skill but have no structured way to teach it. At the same time, many graduates and job seekers struggle with interviews because they lack practical interview training and feedback.
Existing platforms usually solve only one part of this problem — courses, mentorship, skill exchange, career tests, or interview preparation. We wanted to bring these pieces together into one accessible ecosystem.
That led to Skill-IT: a platform where users can discover their career direction, learn from peers, teach what they know, and practice interviews with AI.
What it does
Skill-IT combines three core modules:
1. Career Discovery Users answer AI-powered MCQs designed around their interests, aptitude, and personality. The system analyzes their responses and maps them toward suitable career fields such as software development, data science, cybersecurity, design, and more.
2. Skill Swap Users can list the skills they know and the skills they want to learn. The platform helps connect learners with suitable peer mentors, enabling people to exchange knowledge instead of relying entirely on paid courses.
To improve trust, Skill-IT includes pre-screening quizzes, demo teaching videos, peer reviews, progressive trust scores, and tiered skill levels.
3. AI Interview Trainer Users can participate in voice-based mock interviews. Their responses are analyzed for aspects such as content, grammar, fluency, relevance, tone, and confidence, followed by constructive feedback.
Skill-IT also introduces a token-based learning loop, where users can earn tokens by teaching and use those tokens to access learning opportunities.
How we built it
We designed Skill-IT as a modular application so that career discovery, skill exchange, and interview preparation could operate as connected components within one platform.
The frontend was developed using React Native, while Firebase Authentication handles user authentication. Firestore stores structured information such as profiles, skill tags, and career-test results, while Firebase Realtime Database supports real-time communication and skill matching.
For AI functionality, the Career Test integrates with the Hugging Face inference API, while the Interview Trainer uses React Voice / Web Speech capabilities to capture spoken responses and process them using NLP-based analysis.
The platform also includes role-based functionality for learners, mentors, and users who want to perform both roles, along with Razorpay integration for potential premium memberships.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was trying to combine three different problem areas — career discovery, peer-to-peer learning, and interview preparation — without making the platform feel like three separate applications.
Another major challenge was trust in peer-to-peer learning. If anyone can claim to teach a skill, learners need a way to determine whether that person actually has sufficient knowledge. We addressed this through skill pre-screening quizzes, teaching demonstrations, peer reviews, proof such as portfolios or certifications, and progressive trust levels.
We also had to think about how to motivate users to both teach and learn. This led to the token-based reward mechanism, creating a cycle where teaching contributes to the ability to learn from others.
Finally, integrating AI-driven career mapping and voice-based interview analysis required us to think carefully about how user inputs could be converted into meaningful and actionable feedback.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of creating a unified concept that connects the complete journey from "What should I learn?" → "How can I learn it?" → "How can I prove it?" → "Am I ready for the interview?"
Instead of building another conventional course platform, we designed Skill-IT around peer-to-peer knowledge exchange, AI-assisted career discovery, and interactive interview preparation.
We also developed a trust mechanism for skill swapping rather than simply allowing users to claim expertise. The combination of quizzes, demo teaching videos, peer reviews, trust levels, and proof-based validation gives learners more information when choosing whom to learn from.
Another accomplishment is the token-based ecosystem, which creates an incentive for users to contribute knowledge rather than only consume content.
Our prototype and research work also helped us validate the concept through user-focused insights, including interest in peer learning, affordability, teaching incentives, trust mechanisms, and integrated career support.
What we learned
We learned that solving an education problem is not simply about putting more content online.
The bigger challenge is creating an ecosystem where people have the right direction, the right learning opportunity, enough trust, and a way to measure their progress.
We also learned that peer-to-peer learning can become much more useful when combined with proper validation. A simple skill marketplace is not enough — learners need signals that help them identify reliable teachers.
Most importantly, we learned how different technologies can work together to create a complete user journey. AI, real-time databases, voice processing, gamification, and peer interaction each solve a different part of the problem, but their real value comes from connecting them into one experience.
What's next for Skill-IT
The next stage of Skill-IT is focused on making the platform more accessible, intelligent, and career-oriented.
Planned improvements include:
- Multilingual support for regional languages and wider accessibility.
- Deaf-friendly video learning with real-time transcription overlays.
- Advanced AI interview simulations with feedback on tone, confidence, and posture.
- Placement integrations with companies and college placement cells.
- Gamified learning through badges, streaks, and challenges.
- AI-evaluated skill certificates based on completed learning modules and skill exchanges.
The long-term goal is to evolve Skill-IT into a unified ecosystem where users can discover their direction, learn from real people, validate their skills, and prepare for the workplace — all within one platform.
