About the Project
Inspiration
Every student has potential, but not every student knows what skills they need to reach their career goal. As a first-year CSE student, I realized that students often learn different technologies without knowing whether those skills match the requirements of their desired job role.
This inspired me to build AI-Powered Skill Gap Analysis, a platform that helps students understand where they currently stand and what they should learn next.
What It Does
The platform analyzes a student's resume and current skills, compares them with the skills required for a selected job role, and identifies the skill gaps.
It provides:
- Resume and skill analysis
- Identification of strong and missing skills
- Skill-gap score
- Job-role based skill comparison
- Personalized learning recommendations
- A step-by-step learning roadmap
- Visual representation of the skill gap
How I Built It
I built the project using Python and Flask for the backend, along with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript for the frontend.
The basic workflow is:
Resume Upload → Skill Extraction → Job Requirement Analysis → Skill Comparison → Gap Identification → Personalized Roadmap
Python handles the core analysis and comparison logic, while the web interface allows users to upload their resume and view their results in an easy-to-understand format.
What I Learned
While building this project, I learned how to:
- Build a web application using Flask
- Connect frontend and backend components
- Work with resume data and skill extraction
- Design logic for comparing skills
- Present results using charts and visualizations
- Think about real-world problems from a user's perspective
- Debug and improve a project through multiple iterations
As a beginner, this project also helped me understand how different technologies can work together to create a complete application.
Challenges I Faced
One of the biggest challenges was deciding how to accurately extract and identify skills from a resume. Different people can describe the same skill in different ways, so handling variations in skill names was challenging.
Another challenge was designing the skill-comparison logic so that the results were simple and useful rather than overwhelming. I also faced difficulties while connecting the frontend with the Flask backend and debugging errors during development.
These challenges helped me improve my problem-solving skills and taught me that building a real-world project requires continuous testing, learning, and improvement.
Future Scope
In the future, I would like to improve the platform by adding:
- More advanced AI-based resume analysis
- More job roles and skill databases
- Personalized course recommendations
- Interview-question generation
- Resume improvement suggestions
- User accounts and analysis history
- More accurate AI-based skill matching
The ultimate goal is to make career preparation more personalized, accessible, and data-driven for students and job seekers.
