Inspiration

We were inspired by the gap between older and younger generations in today’s digital world. Many seniors possess valuable life skills such as gardening, knitting, or storytelling but often find modern technology challenging. Meanwhile, young people are fluent in tech but rarely get opportunities to learn traditional skills from elders. Skill Exchanger was created to bridge this gap — encouraging mutual learning, connection, and community growth.

What it does

Skill Exchanger is a simple web platform where: Seniors can post requests to teach skills (e.g., gardening, cooking, history). Younger users can offer help with tech tasks (e.g., setting up devices, using social media, basic coding).

How we built it

We built Skill Exchanger using: Frontend: React.js for building a responsive and dynamic interface Styling: CSS and Tailwind for a clean, accessible design Backend (optional or planned): Firebase for authentication and database management Deployment: Hosted on Google Cloud / Firebase Hosting

Challenges we ran into

Designing an interface friendly for seniors, ensuring simplicity and clarity. Implementing real-time post updates using Firebase. Handling responsive layouts across different screen sizes. Making the platform visually appealing yet minimal for easy usability.

What we learned

Mastering React fundamentals like components, props, and state management. Understanding how to design for accessibility and user diversity. Using Firebase integration for storing and managing real-time data. How technology can be used as a bridge for social connection and inclusion.

What's next for Skill Exchanger

Adding chat and video call support for online learning sessions. Implementing AI-based matching between seniors and younger helpers. Launching a mobile app version using React Native. Partnering with local communities and NGOs to reach real users.
