Inspiration
The main inspiration behind Skill Swap was the difficulty many students face when trying to acquire practical skills beyond the classroom. Quality online courses can be expensive, and students often have limited opportunities to learn from people in other departments or fields.
I realized that every student has some knowledge or skill that could benefit someone else. For example, a student who knows Python can teach programming to another student, while learning graphic design, video editing, or digital marketing in return.
This idea inspired me to develop a platform where knowledge becomes a shared resource rather than something people must always purchase. My vision was to create an environment where students learn from each other, build real projects, and develop practical experience without financial barriers.
What it does
How we built it
I planned Skill Swap as a web and mobile platform using a modern technology stack. Step 1: Identifying the Problem I identified four major problems: the high cost of skill-building courses, limited cross-disciplinary learning, the absence of a structured skill-exchange platform, and passive learning without practical project experience.
I designed Skill Swap to address these problems through free, collaborative, project-based learning.
Step 2: Designing the Platform I planned the platform around the following core features: User registration and skill profiles. AI-powered matching between learners and peer teachers. Recommendations based on complementary skills. Structured learning sessions with project deliverables. Real-time messaging and video communication. Feedback, skill endorsements, and portfolio development.
Step 3: Selecting the Technology Stack The proposed technology stack includes:
Component Technology Web frontend React and Next.js Mobile application React Native or Flutter Backend Node.js and Express Database PostgreSQL Caching and sessions Redis Real-time video/audio WebRTC Live messaging Socket.IO AI orchestration LangChain Skill matching NLP and recommendation engine Deployment Docker, CI/CD, and cloud infrastructure These technologies were selected to support a responsive interface, organized data management, real-time communication, and intelligent skill recommendations.
Step 4: Developing the Matching System The central feature of Skill Swap is its skill-matching system. The proposed system analyzes users' skill descriptions and learning goals to identify complementary skill pairs.
For example, a learner interested in web development could connect with someone who wants to learn Python, provided their skills and learning goals complement each other.
NLP-based matching can compare the meaning of skill descriptions rather than relying only on exact keyword matches. Feedback from previous exchanges can then help improve future recommendations.
Step 5: Implementing Project-Based Learning I structured the learning process around practical tasks rather than theory alone. Participants would agree on learning objectives, collaborate on a project, produce deliverables, and provide feedback to each other.
This approach allows both participants to strengthen their knowledge and develop evidence of their practical abilities.
Challenges we ran into
While developing our Skill Swap – Skill Exchange Platform, we identified several challenges that could affect the platform's performance, reliability, and user experience.
- Accurate Skill Matching 2.Real Time Communication 3.Fake Profile and Trust Some users might provide incorrect skill information or create fake profiles. To address this, we proposed university email verification, skill endorsements, and community reporting features.
- Lack of Data for New Users
- Integrating Multiple Technologies
- Making Learning Practical ## Accomplishments that we're proud of we are proud that we had the best solution for this ## What we learned These challenges taught us the importance of careful planning, reliable system design, user security, effective communication, and continuous improvement. We also learned that a successful platform must provide both useful technology and a trustworthy learning environment. ## What's next for Skill Exchange Platform
- Expand to more Universities
- Add Project based learning
