Inspiration
A large amount of people are dealing with depression and anxiety every single day, and little bits and pieces of improvement can help lead people to a more positive mood and better feelings throughout the day. We wanted to find something subtle, simple, yet powerful that could help assist people with their moods.
What it does
With the click of a button, you can automatically detect the warmth of the color in the room, and an LED board will change it's lighting to even out warm or cool tones to balance the temperature in the room.
How we built it
We utilized a Circuit Playground Express from Adafruit to process the information and to collect the data from the room. By using this device we were able to send signals over to a breadboard where a circuit logically laid out different LED lights that could be controlled in groups, with PWMs from the circuit board that could control the brightness.
Challenges we ran into
The primary challenge we had was wiring. Nobody on our team had any experience previously with any kind of wiring, so learning so much of it in such a short time frame was a very difficult challenge. We also thought that we could measure the amount of red and blue light directly from the sensors on-board, but we had to utilize a clever trick to bounce light off of objects and measure the reflections in order to determine ambient color temperature. Two of the three of us did not sleep on the final day, working hard to finish our parts of the project.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We never gave up during our project. Many times we had to restart and completely rethink our approach to the project, and it was a very difficult task. Getting no sleep overnight and spending 20+ hours working on this project over 2 days with little to no breaks was definitely hard, but it's something we knew we were getting into.
What we learned
We learned that working together is the most effective way of getting things like these projects done. We learned so much about wiring, input/output, hardware, arduinos, circuits, resistors, conductivity, and so much more. Even if we don't win anything, we walk away happy knowing that we learned something important!
What's next for Skibidi Aesthetic Mood Light
Our group will likely continue our focus on software, as hardware really isn't any of our cups of tea. However, we did have fun making this little project, and we could have more fun in the future building more!
