Inspiration
As we've grown older, we've noticed that the generational gap in language, particularly informal slang, has widened significantly. It’s reached a point where some of us struggle to understand our younger siblings, and if we find it challenging, our parents and other older generations definitely do too. This language barrier makes it harder to connect with younger generations and form a sense of community. Inspired by this, we created Skibid.AI to bridge the gap, not just in language and articulation, but also in humor and other forms of communication, helping different generations connect more easily.
link This speaks on the difficulties parents have with communicating with their children.
What it does
As of right now, Skibid.AI is a translation service that can give translations to the slang and commonly used terms from gen alpha. It helps users by breaking down the newer generation's unique language, making it easier for people to connect, engage, and feel more comfortable in conversations where unfamiliar slang might otherwise be a barrier.
How we built it
Using Node, we built a website in react that uses multiple dictionaries to live translate words and phrases.
Challenges we ran into
Interactive 3D Model Implementation: Creating a 3D model that interacts with users, including features like shading, rotation, and animation, was a complex task. Achieving the right balance of responsiveness and performance required extensive testing and adjustments.
Live Translation Algorithm: Developing an algorithm capable of translating slang in real-time was particularly challenging.
Infinite Marquee Algorithm: Implementing a smooth, interactive infinite marquee for animated website segments was another hurdle. We needed to ensure seamless transitions and maintain site performance, which demanded a delicate balance between visual appeal and functionality.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Being able to create a simple, yet elegant UI that integrates a 3D model. Being able to animate certain segments of the website such as the scrolling text that does live translations.
What we learned
As this was the first hackathon for most of us, we learned quite a lot from this experience. First thing was planning as a team. Being able to co-ordinate tasks and work productively was something we picked up quick as we started the hackathon. Learning how to use GitHub to collaborate on the project was another huge task that we had to overcome. As we didn't have much experience using the platform, we decided to take a boots on the ground approach and took on the task head on. To express our creativity, we were able to build off of each others' ideas to create a wildly creative, humorous, and innovative product and pitch.
What's next for Skibid.AI
Our goal is to deliver an app that not only helps users translate slang across generations but also makes it easy to understand and engage confidently with any community, no matter how niche. We're expanding our translation network to ensure that anyone can connect and communicate, whether they're catching up on the latest Gen Alpha trends or diving into the unique lingo of specific communities like sports.
