Inspiration

I love community driven games like Gartic Phone and Reddit’s own r/place. We wanted to create something that blends drawing, surprise reveals, and the collaborative chaos of Reddit users passing ideas down a chain.

What it does

SketchTale Crusaders is a Reddit Daily game where players take turns writing prompts and drawing them. The chain grows day by day, but the final artwork is only revealed after 24 hours. Each daily round produces a gallery of bizarre and hilarious interpretations, fully powered by the community.

How we built it

Devvit Web for the Interactive Post front-end (React + TypeScript). Redis (Devvit default) to store rounds, timelines, and participants. Reddit Media API for saving and serving drawings. Background music and animations to give the game a playful, arcade-like feel. A moderator-only panel to start new daily rounds and force reveal if needed.

Challenges we ran into

Designing a flow that works for both demo mode (instant reveal for judges) and production mode (24h timed reveal). Making sure each new daily post starts with a fresh game state while still archiving past rounds. Handling notifications/pings without spamming users. Browser restrictions around autoplay audio and canvas tools.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Built a fully functional chain game inside Reddit. Smooth prompt → draw → reveal loop that feels natural in an Interactive Post. Daily round system with archived galleries. Extra polish like animations, countdowns, and music toggles for a fun player experience.

What we learned

How to use Devvit Web with React for games inside Reddit posts. Managing per-post state cleanly with Redis mappings. Community mechanics (opt-in mentions, daily reveal posts) are just as important as core gameplay. The value of designing demo-friendly features for hackathons.

What's next for SketchTale Crusaders

Streaks & badges to reward consistent players. Themed rounds (e.g. “Spooky prompts” for October). Smarter notification system to nudge players when a reveal goes live. Public launch in a dedicated subreddit where anyone can join daily. Potential expansions like multi-chain rounds or remix modes.
