Cooking is naturally a social experience, but today's livestream platforms turn it into passive entertainment. We built Sizzle to change that by enabling people to cook together in real time, with the host guiding every step while keeping the entire audience synchronized from prep to plating.
What it does
Sizzle transforms passive cooking livestreams into interactive cooking experiences. Hosts create recipes with step-by-step instructions while viewers follow along in real time. As participants complete each step, the hosts can monitor everyone's progress, answer questions, and keep the entire class synchronized.
With recipe management, real-time participation tracking, live communication, and synchronized cooking workflows, Sizzle enables people to truly cook together—not just watch.
How we built it
Sizzle was built using React Native, TypeScript, Expo, Supabase, PostgreSQL, Cloudflare Workers, Cloudflare Pages, and LiveKit for real-time audio and video. We focused on creating a mobile-first experience with a scalable backend, secure authentication, and a responsive user interface that works across devices.
Challenges we ran into
Building real-time synchronization between hosts and viewers was one of the biggest challenges. We also spent significant time refining the user experience to make cooking feel natural on mobile while ensuring the platform remained responsive and reliable during live sessions.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud of creating an experience that goes beyond traditional livestreaming. Instead of simply watching someone cook, users actively participate, stay synchronized with the host, and learn together in a more engaging and interactive environment.
What we learned
Developing Sizzle reinforced the importance of user experience in real-time applications. We learned how critical performance, responsive design, and intuitive interaction patterns are when multiple users are participating simultaneously.
What's next for Sizzle
Our roadmap includes enhanced creator tools, richer analytics for hosts, expanded social cooking experiences, AI-powered cooking assistants, intelligent recipe generation, and additional collaboration features that make cooking together even more immersive and engaging.
