Our Story: Building SIRKULO 🌱

We were moved to start building SIRKULO after a hike to Mount Gede, where we witnessed firsthand how the trail—up to the savanna—was covered in trash. It was disheartening to see that litter had become a normal sight, and no one seemed to care. That experience opened our eyes to how disconnected people can be from the impact of their own waste, especially in natural spaces meant to be preserved. It made us ask: What if we could create something that encourages hikers to take responsibility for the items they bring and leave behind?

Around the same time, we were working on a small-scale vermicomposting system, inspired by how worms naturally recycle organic waste into fertile compost. It taught us that even simple, overlooked things—like kitchen scraps—could be transformed into something useful. This sparked our belief that waste, whether organic or inorganic, doesn’t have to be the end of the line—it can become a starting point. We combined this concept with our mountain experience to build SIRKULO: a mobile platform that tracks hikers' items to promote clean hiking, while also offering a circular marketplace where users can recycle, donate, or compost everyday waste.

Building SIRKULO came with its own set of challenges—from changing people’s behavior, to designing a system that works offline, and finding ways to verify user honesty. But we’re proud of what we’ve achieved, and this project taught us the power of combining awareness, accountability, and technology. We hope SIRKULO can grow into a movement that inspires more responsible outdoor adventures and better waste habits at home. Thank you to Garuda Hackathon for providing the space and opportunity that allowed us to turn this idea into a real, working application—we wouldn’t have reached this point without it.
