SIREN — Real-Time Disaster Alert PWA
Inspiration
Natural disasters and emergency situations often create confusion, delayed communication, and lack of accessible safety information. During floods, cyclones, heatwaves, or severe weather conditions, many people struggle to receive quick alerts and proper emergency guidance, especially on mobile devices with unstable internet connectivity.
We wanted to build a lightweight and accessible platform that could provide fast emergency alerts, safety instructions, and offline accessibility in a simple and installable mobile experience.
This idea led to the creation of SIREN — a Progressive Web App designed to deliver real-time disaster awareness and emergency preparedness in a clean and responsive interface.
What it does
SIREN provides:
- Real-time disaster and weather alert interface
- Mobile-first responsive emergency dashboard
- Installable Progressive Web App (PWA)
- Offline support using service workers
- Emergency guidance and safety instructions
- Clean alert categorization and UI
- Lightweight experience optimized for fast access during emergencies
The platform is designed to work smoothly on both desktop and mobile devices while providing a native-app-like experience directly from the browser.
How we built it
We built SIREN using:
- React.js for frontend development
- Vite for fast development and optimized builds
- Tailwind CSS for responsive UI styling
- Progressive Web App configuration using service workers
- Express.js backend architecture for API handling
- Modern responsive component-based architecture
The project was deployed using Vercel for frontend hosting and optimized for mobile installation support.
Challenges we ran into
Some of the major challenges included:
- Designing a clean mobile-first emergency dashboard
- Configuring Progressive Web App installation and offline caching
- Managing responsive layouts for multiple screen sizes
- Optimizing loading states and alert components
- Handling deployment and frontend-backend integration within hackathon time constraints
We also explored integrating push notification systems for future emergency alert delivery.
What we learned
Through this project, we learned:
- PWA architecture and service worker integration
- Mobile-first responsive design principles
- Real-world deployment workflows
- Frontend optimization techniques
- Emergency-focused UI/UX design
- Better component structuring and scalable React architecture
Future scope
Future improvements planned for SIREN include:
- Multi-language accessibility support
- AI-powered emergency recommendations
- SOS communication features
SIREN represents a step toward making emergency information more accessible, faster, and easier to use during critical situations.
