Inspiration

This project was inspired by the common business challenge of managing and understanding corporate travel expenses. Raw travel data is often scattered across multiple systems, making it difficult to gain a holistic view of spending, identify trends, or find opportunities for cost savings. My goal was to demonstrate how a modern, end-to-end data pipeline could transform this fragmented data into a strategic asset for business leaders.

What We Learned

In building this project, I learned to orchestrate a complete data flow, from source to insight. I gained hands-on experience with data ingestion from external sources like Heroku PostgreSQL into Salesforce Data Cloud. I learned the critical process of data modeling by creating a Data Model Object (DMO) to structure the raw information efficiently. I also deepened my skills in Tableau Next, not only for building compelling dashboards but also for defining a powerful semantic model that translates technical data into a business-friendly language for AI and users. Finally, I learned the value of integrating analytics directly into collaboration platforms like Slack.

How We Built It

The project was built by first ingesting business travel data from a Heroku PostgreSQL database into Salesforce Data Cloud. I then created a DMO to consolidate and prepare the data, including calculated fields for key metrics like 'Advance Booking Window' and 'Total Air Spend'. This modeled data was then connected to Tableau Next, where I designed a dashboard for comprehensive analysis. I defined a semantic model to enable Analytics Agents to answer natural language questions about the data. The final step was to integrate the insights into a collaboration by linking Tableau Next to Slack channels for easy sharing and discussion.

Challenges We Ran Into

A key challenge was accurately defining the semantic model. This required a deep understanding of potential business questions and translating them into precise metrics and relationships. If not defined correctly, the AI agents could provide inaccurate or irrelevant answers. Another challenge was ensuring seamless data integration and connectivity between all the different platforms—from Heroku PostgreSQL to Salesforce, Tableau Next, and Slack—to create a truly unified and reliable system.

What's Next for Siren Business Air

Next, we'll make Siren Business Air even smarter with two new features:

  • AI-Powered Savings: Recommendations that help you save money on travel.
  • Carbon Footprint Tracking: A dashboard to see and reduce your environmental impact.
