Inspiration
We were inspired by the environmental activism challenges to create an app that makes saving water easier and encourages healthy drinking habits.
What it does
There are many features on this app including quizzes to check your water knowledge, a timer to keep track of water usage in the shower, a tracker to keep track of how many cups of water you are drinking, and a connection to Spotify so you can make shorter showers more fun! Water use all consolidated in one app!
How we built it
We used Swift and XCode to make the app. We all met at Kode With Klossy App Development Program so we wanted to use our knowledge on app dev to help the environment.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into many challenges in the remote atmosphere like trying to collaborate in different times zones. While we overcame those challenges, our biggest challenge was the time constraint. We have lots of ideas on ways to improve the app which include building more features like a point system to reward users, longer and more in-depth quizzes, notifications to remind users to drink water and connect the music and the timer to help the user keep track of how long they are in the shower in a fun and musical way.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are very proud that we were able to use the languages we learned over summer camp and apply them to this Hackathon. Even within the time limit, we got an incredible amount of features added despite many coding bugs and it has a beautiful aesthetic. This was the first time any of us used Xcode outside of camp, so making an app without the guidance of our teachers and TA's was new to us but we relied on each other to get us through it.
What we learned
We learned about how to convey important and urgent topics through an app in a fun and accessible way. We built on skills such as product design. We learned proper product development techniques like figuring out an MVP, drawing up wireframes, and how to collaborate remotely.
What's next for sip&save
We most definitely want to continue this project outside of TechTogether and we will start by adding the features we weren't able to add like the aforementioned: point system, more quizzes, notifications, and a better connection between the timer and Spotify. We would also like to branch out to new environmental issues like plastic consumption.
All in all, we had fun, created an amazing project, and worked on our coding skills. We are very proud of what we have accomplished and cannot wait to see where this project takes us.
