Inspiration
Our interactions with our peers who study abroad, online forums as well as local blogs documented some of the struggles Singaporeans face while they are overseas. In particular, one of the most brought-up challenges was the difficulty in finding a community that helps them keep in touch with their Singaporean roots.
What it does
SingaLinks provides a platform for overseas Singaporeans to connect with one another through common interests such as the love for Singaporean food, which make them uniquely Singaporean, and helps to build a community for Singaporeans outside of Singapore.
How we built it
Challenges we ran into
- lack of familiarity with prototyping tools
- small sample size - user stories were only gathered from a handful of friends studying abroad
- not being able to meet physically due to the restrictions
- short duration of time given to complete the project
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- being able to complete all the elements we had set out to do
- creating a product within the duration of the hackathon that we otherwise would have taken weeks to complete
What we learned
Overseas Singaporeans yearn to find a sense of community in a foreign country, but there are currently insufficient avenues and opportunities for them to do so.
What's next for SingaLinks
- Expanding our application to cater to more countries, eg. UK, China, etc.
- A “For You Page” for linked users to share their stories (similar to Facebook Groups).
- An improved matching algorithm that takes into account the physical distance of users.
- Allowing users to create and add their own activities.
